I had cause to investigate some members of the Baker family and found what might be an error when I compared what I found on the IGI with an entry submitted to your site.

It concerns John Baker, born abt 1720, son of Thomas Baker and Dorothy Gilbert. In the past he has been associated with the marriage to Elizabeth Hill but the IGI indicates that this John married Eleanor Brown, 13 Oct 1745, Folkestone. They had the following children, all Folkestone: Sarah chr 13 Apr 1747 Ellen chr 10 Mar 1749 d. 31 Mar 1751 Edmund chr 19 Apr 1751 d. 18 Sep 1751 Edmund chr 17 Jul 1752 John chr 26 Jan 1755 Ellen or Helen chr 8 Jul 1757 Mary chr 5 Mar 1760 Ann chr 28 May 1762

Edmund (1752) married Margaret Smith, 11 Oct 1774 and had

John chr 13 Mar 1778 Margaret chr 7 Nov 1779 (all records again for Folkestone) John married Elizabeth but there are two possibilities here and I have a contact who is working on this.

I stress that the above records are what I have gleaned from the IGI and thus should be verified by a 'Baker expert'- but the John Baker who married Elizabeth Hill in 1757 is given as born abt 1732 so definitely not the John born 1720.

If I may add my two pennyworth to this debate, the Folkestone Gedcom has two Johns, but some confusion!

John Baker chr 2 Oct 1720, son of Thomas Baker (Jan 1681) & Dorothy Gilbert, is shown:-

Marriage 1 13 Oct 1745 Eleanor Brown

Marriage 2 13 Feb 1757 Elizabeth Hill

John Baker chr 3 March 1724/5, son of Edmund Baker (Dec 1691) & Sarah (Unknown) is shown:

Marriage 13/10/1745 Eleanor Brown.

Obviously (at least) one of the entries is incorrect but the additional data might help in resolving the issue.

I have just found and posted four children for the John Baker & Elizabeth Hill marriage. There are also a number of children in the gedcom of the John Baker/Eleanor Brown marriage (though you do not seem to have this marriage or the children, the entries check out with the IG records).

This now shows that:-

The John Baker/Elizabeth Brown marriage was producing children from 1747-1762.

John Baker & Elizabeth Hill were married 13 Feb 1757 and producing children from 1760 to 1766.

If we rule out bigamy, it would seem it is NOT possible that one John was the husband of both. Therefore the question seems to be, if these are the right two Johns, which was which?

In the gedcom only the Oct 1720 John is shown married to Elizabeth Hill (whereas both are shown married to Eleanor), which might suggest the Mar 1724/5 John as the husband of Eleanor. Inconveniently, the earlier John would then have the later marriage (he would have been 37 on marriage), so no clear clue there.

In addition, I did go into the IGI and downloaded every Penny from Folkestone and integrated that information into the trees. I normally don't post all the IGI data as source information since it is so readily available.

The record also shows that "a" (I think this is "the") John Penny married Elizabeth Smith on 12 NOV 1758 in Folkestone and that they had two children recorded in the IGI, John Penny c: MAR 1761 in Folkestone and Baker Penny c: JUN 1764 in Folkestone.

We know quite a lot about these individuals, but there is room for much additional research and possible corrections in assumptions. There also is some confusion with the John Penny/Panny born in 1741 who is listed as the husband of Judith Wood. We find a John Penny married Judith WOOD, 23 Jul 1768 in St Mary's The Virgin Church, Dover, Kent. Died Jan 1805 in Folkestone, Kent. They had the following children:

i. Ann PENNY; Born 1769. Christened 13 Dec 1769 in Folkestone, Kent. ii. Richard PENNY iii. William Wood PENNY; Born 1775. Christened 24 May 1775 in Folkestone, Kent. Research Batch No P020721.

Shelley Haigger writes, "In an attempt to fathom out why you had not considered that the John PENNY who married Judith WOOD could be the son of Richard PENNY and Sarah RADFORD, I searched the IGI (as you stated this as your source) and couldn't find him. John PENNY married Judith WOOD, had three known children, and was of HMS Burford when he died 1779 in South Africa. His wife Judith died 1805 Folkestone. According to his descendant Shelley Haigger, John Penny was an able seaman on HMS Burford and the Public Records Office at Kew indicates he died in 1779 in a hospital in Simonstown - must be South Africa. However there wasn't any official hospital in Simonstown at the time, but Simonstown was then a place under Dutch control where ships would stop. I am sending you two lines, both direct meaning no other siblings unless relevant.

Thomas Godden of Brabourne and Penelope (nee could be Sladden because there is a son named that). Thomas died 1663, I have a copy of a will to that effect. Their daughter Joane (She is the one I told you about before) married 05 Dec 1665, to Thomas Cullen at St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. He was a weaver.

Thomas & Joane Cullen had a son Richard born 1669. He married Affrey Jenkin, 03 Dec 1699 at Folkestone. Their son James b 24 Jun 1711 married twice, first Margaret Hogben 1734 second Mary Ovel 1746, he was a cordwainer. Their son Richard b 17 Nov 1754 married Alive Jeffrey 10 Jan 1775. He was a mariner and the first member of the family to work for the Rothchilds. Alice lived to be 99.

Now their son Thomas b 29 Dec 1790 married Susanna Dixon 01 Aug 1811. He was also a mariner and also worked for the Rothchilds. They had a son Thomas b 15 Oct 1815 married Mary Wiles Godden (I will trace Mary's Goddens when I have finish this). This Thomas had quite a varied career but always worked for the Rothchilds, moved away from Folkestone to the Dulwich area where there is a family stone at Nunhead. From here on down everything is documented. Their son Frederick b 09 Sep 1860 married Selina Adelaide Warr, they had a daughter Emma Maud b 1889 married Archie Joseph George Marsh, these were my grandparents.

Mary Wiles Godden's ancestors (I think you will be interested in this as I think this our connection).

Stephen Godden b 08 Aug 1613 Maidstone married Elizabeth Hall 20 Mar 1648. He died 1709. I have his will also. He was a cooper. Now Stephen & Elizabeth had a son Stephen b 12 Sep 1653 who married Mary Gardiner 1674 in Folkestone. Steven had a son Thomas b 01 Jan 1672 who married Elizabeth and had a son also named Thomas b 06 Sep 1703. This Thomas married Mary Baker and had a son named Richard who appears to have married twice first to Elizabeth Sladden and then to Elizabeth Puttee. They had two sons, one, Richard b 14 Jun 1778 who married Martha Golden and, two, David b 22 Dec 1780 who married Margaret Wiles. He married for a second time but it is the first marriage that produced Mary Wiles Godden. So there you are hope it will be of some use to you.

In case you don't have this info on Richard (1744). "Richard GODDEN was a landlord of the 'Three Mackerel' on the Strade. It was a well known haunt of Excisemen, and when it was demolished, circa 1936, moving wall panels and hides for contraband goods were found. I am sending you two lines, both direct meaning no other siblings unless relevant.

Thomas Godden of Brabourne and Penelope (nee could be Sladden because there is a son named that). Thomas died 1663, I have a copy of a will to that effect Their daughter Joane (She is the one I told you about before) married 05 Dec 1665, to Thomas Cullen at St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. He was a weaver.

Thomas & Joane Cullen had a son Richard b 03 Dec 1669, he married Affrey Jenkin, 03 Dec 1699 at Folkestone. Their son James b 24 Jun 1711 married twice, first Margaret Hogben 1734 second Mary Ovel 1746, he was a cordwainer. Their son Richard b 17 Nov 1754 married Alive Jeffrey 10 Jan 1775, he was a mariner and the first member of the family to work for the Rothchilds, Alice lived to be 99.

Now their son Thomas b 29 Dec 1790 married Susanna Dixon 01 Aug 1811, he was also a mariner and also worked for the Rothchilds. They had a son Thomas b 15 Oct 1815 married Mary Wiles Godden (I will trace Mary's Goddens when I have finish this). This Thomas had quite a varied career but always worked for the Rothchilds, moved away from Folkestone to the Dulwich area where there is a family stone at Nunhead. From here on down everything is documented. Their son Frederick b 09 Sep 1860 married Selina Adelaide Warr, they had a daughter Emma Maud b 1889 married Archie Joseph George Marsh, these were my grandparents.

Mary Wiles Godden's ancestors ( I think you will be interested in this as I think this our connection.

Stephen Godden b 08 Aug 1613 Maidstone married Elizabeth Hall 20 Mar 1648 He died 1709 I have his will also, he was a cooper. Now Stephen & Elizabeth had a son Stephen b 12 Sep 1653 who married Mary Gardiner 1674 in Folkestone. Steven had a son Thomas b 01 Jan 1672 who married Elizabeth and had a son also named Thomas b 06 Sep 1703. This Thomas married Mary Baker and had a son named Richard who appears to have married twice first to Elizabeth Sladden and then to Elizabeth Puttee. They had two sons, one Richard b 14 Jun 1778 who married Martha Golden an, two, David b 22 Dec 1780 who married Margaret Wiles. He married for a second time but it is the first marriage that produced Mary Wiles Godden. So there you are hope it will be of some use to you.

I am sending you two lines, both direct meaning no other siblings unless relevant.

Thomas Godden of Brabourne and Penelope (nee could be Sladden because there is a son named that). Thomas died 1663, I have a copy of a will to that effect Their daughter Joane (She is the one I told you about before) married 05 Dec 1665, to Thomas Cullen at St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. He was a weaver.

Thomas & Joane Cullen had a son Richard b 03 Dec 1669, he married Affrey Jenkin, 03 Dec 1699 at Folkestone. Their son James b 24 Jun 1711 married twice, first Margaret Hogben 1734 second Mary Ovel 1746, he was a cordwainer. Their son Richard b 17 Nov 1754 married Alive Jeffrey 10 Jan 1775, he was a mariner and the first member of the family to work for the Rothchilds, Alice lived to be 99.

Now their son Thomas b 29 Dec 1790 married Susanna Dixon 01 Aug 1811, he was also a mariner and also worked for the Rothchilds. They had a son Thomas b 15 Oct 1815 married Mary Wiles Godden (I will trace Mary's Goddens when I have finish this). This Thomas had quite a varied career but always worked for the Rothchilds, moved away from Folkestone to the Dulwich area where there is a family stone at Nunhead. From here on down everything is documented. Their son Frederick b 09 Sep 1860 married Selina Adelaide Warr, they had a daughter Emma Maud b 1889 married Archie Joseph George Marsh, these were my grandparents.

Mary Wiles Godden's ancestors ( I think you will be interested in this as I think this our connection.

Stephen Godden b 08 Aug 1613 Maidstone married Elizabeth Hall 20 Mar 1648 He died 1709 I have his will also, he was a cooper. Now Stephen & Elizabeth had a son Stephen b 12 Sep 1653 who married Mary Gardiner 1674 in Folkestone. Steven had a son Thomas b 01 Jan 1672 who married Elizabeth and had a son also named Thomas b 06 Sep 1703. This Thomas married Mary Baker and had a son named Richard who appears to have married twice first to Elizabeth Sladden and then to Elizabeth Puttee. They had two sons, one Richard b 14 Jun 1778 who married Martha Golden and, two, David b 22 Dec 1780 who married Margaret Wiles. He married for a second time but it is the first marriage that produced Mary Wiles Godden. So there you are hope it will be of some use to you.

It was a well known haunt of Excisemen, and when it was demolished, circa 1936, moving wall panels and hides for contraband goods were found. Occ Baker 1861 census not found 1871 census not found possibly the William Baker b Folkestone 1801, widower, occ Baker in Elham Union Workhouse, Lyminge on 1861 & 1871 census. Have Death certificate dated 9.7.1877, but gives no further details, apart from cause of death - old age. If this is my William Baker, need will (if he left one), need to find out why he is in the Workhouse when 2 of his sons were doing very well as fishmongers in Folkestone. Have gone through the surviving records for the Workhouse for the period, but have not found date of entry or any other data.

Hello Again Richard

I am sending you two lines, both direct meaning no other siblings unless relevant.

Thomas Godden of Brabourne and Penelope (nee could be Sladden because there is a son named that). Thomas died 1663, I have a copy of a will to that effect Their daughter Joane (She is the one I told you about before) married 05 Dec 1665, to Thomas Cullen at St. Mary Bredin, Canterbury. He was a weaver.

Thomas & Joane Cullen had a son Richard b 03 Dec 1669, he married Affrey Jenkin, 03 Dec 1699 at Folkestone. Their son James b 24 Jun 1711 married twice, first Margaret Hogben 1734 second Mary Ovel 1746, he was a cordwainer. Their son Richard b 17 Nov 1754 married Alive Jeffrey 10 Jan 1775, he was a mariner and the first member of the family to work for the Rothchilds, Alice lived to be 99.

Now their son Thomas b 29 Dec 1790 married Susanna Dixon 01 Aug 1811, he was also a mariner and also worked for the Rothchilds. They had a son Thomas b 15 Oct 1815 married Mary Wiles Godden (I will trace Mary's Goddens when I have finish this). This Thomas had quite a varied career but always worked for the Rothchilds, moved away from Folkestone to the Dulwich area where there is a family stone at Nunhead. From here on down everything is documented. Their son Frederick b 09 Sep 1860 married Selina Adelaide Warr, they had a daughter Emma Maud b 1889 married Archie Joseph George Marsh, these were my grandparents.

Mary Wiles Godden's ancestors ( I think you will be interested in this as I think this our connection.

Stephen Godden b 08 Aug 1613 Maidstone married Elizabeth Hall 20 Mar 1648 He died 1709 I have his will also, he was a cooper. Now Stephen & Elizabeth had a son Stephen b 12 Sep 1653 who married Mary Gardiner 1674 in Folkestone. Steven had a son Thomas b 01 Jan 1672 who married Elizabeth and had a son also named Thomas b 06 Sep 1703. This Thomas married Mary Baker and had a son named Richard who appears to have married twice first to Elizabeth Sladden and then to Elizabeth Puttee. They had two sons, one Richard b 14 Jun 1778 who married Martha Golden an, two, David b 22 Dec 1780 who married Margaret Wiles. He married for a second time but it is the first marriage that produced Mary Wiles Godden. So there you are hope it will be of some use to you.
