Notes:
Deseronto (pronounced 'DEZ-er-RON-toh.') was settled by Mohawk chief John Deserontyon in 1784. It is situated on the north side of the Bay of Quinte, in Tyendinaga Township. The site was originally part of the Tyendinaga Indian Reserve, which was granted to the Mohawks who had helped the British during the American Revolution. Hugo B. Rathbun built a sawmill and a store there in 1848, then a post office was first established in 1851 and named Mill Point. When J. Bowen became postmaster in 1857, he had the name changed to Bowen. However, in 1859, it became known as Mill Point again.



In 1835, John Culbertson, the grandson of Deserontyon, applied to the Mohawk chiefs for a parcel of land on which he built landings that became known as Culbertson's Wharf. John Culbertson laid out lots in 1855. In 1871, the village was named Mill Point. The postal and village names were then changed to Deseronto in 1881.
