    • BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES GEORGE HILL DETLOR Member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, 1841-6. Concerning his ancestors George H. Detlor said: "My grandfather, John,V. Detlor, emigrated wi th my grandmother from Ireland to New York. Directly after his marriage in the City of New Yo rk they removed to the town of Camden, where they resided with their family, and at the clos e of the rebellion (having joined the Royal Standard) he, with two or three of his sons and s ons-in-law, came to Canada, and finally settled on lands in the township of Fredericksburgh , lot number twenty-one in the sixth concession, where he and his sons lived and died. My fat her moved to the Town of York (now City of Toronto) in 1802; and at the invasion of that plac e by the Americans, in April, 1813, my father lost his life in defence of the place. There i s now but one of my grandfather's children living; an aunt of mine, Mrs. Anne Dulmage, reside s in the village of Sydenham, township of Loughboro, county of Frontenac." These words were u ttered over forty years ago. In 1836, at the last general election before the union of Uppe r and Lower Canada, George H. Detlor and John S. Cartwright were returned in Lennox and Addin gton, and held their seats during the troublesome period that followed. Mr. Detlor, at the ti me, was a merchant in Napanee. After retiring from politics he was for a time clerk of the un ited counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, and later on was appointed Collector of Cus toms for the port of Kingston.
