On proceeding to the house I found the deceased with her throat cut, and I saw the prisoner in custody of two men ; I then took him into custody for attempting to murder the woman ; he said yes, " I did it -I will go with you quietly." On arrival at the stalion house he said " I did it, and I will have to suffer for it."

Superintendent Ryeland.
We regret to announce the death, at his residence, Surry Hills, on Saturday, of Mr. James Ryeland, for many years superintendent of the police depot and the coastal district. Mr. Ryeland, who was in his 66th year, was a native of Gloucestershire, England, and came out to this country in the Bangalore in 1855, under engagement with the Government to join the police force here. He had previously served for five years in the London police, and was specially recommended for the colonial service. On arrival here if was soon seen that his high testimonials were fully deserved, for by strict attention to his duties and his sterling qualities he rapidly rose till he attained the position of superintendent, which he filled with credit to the office and to the great satisfaction of his superiors.

The Late Superintendent Ryeland
On Saturday last the death occured of Mr. James Ryeland, who for many years occipied the position of Superintendent of poilice in the Eastern District. The deceased gentleman was highly respected by all who were acquainted with him, and was particularly beloved by the offices of the police force over whom he ruled, for by reson of his genial and kindly disposition. He had only been ill for short space of time, and the news of his death came rather as a surprise to most people. The Eastern District, over which Mr. Ryeland had supervision, includes the Hawkesbury, and we may say that the utmost regret is expressed by the several police officers in this centre at the untimely demise of their recered and popular chief.
