RE: Horsley Down Not surprised you've had difficulty with this. I've seen reference as:
BATCHELOR Richard Horsley Down SRY - merchant/brwer08Oct1774 24Aug1776 BATCHELOR Richard Bermondsey, Greater London, Surrey, England SRY - merchant 12Feb1778
This comes from "An Alphabetical List of All the Bankrupts from 1st Jan1774 to 30th June 1786 inclusive, with the date of the Certificates and Supersedures to those who have received them. The following list of surnames beginning A to C have been transcribed from the micro-fiche of the records held by the Society of Genealogists in London." http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mwi/bankrup1.txt
I believe this refers to the parish of St John Horsleydown in South London, just northwest of Bermondsey. It's in the Registration District of St Olave, which adjoins the south side of the Thames. The church itself is in Fair St, off Tooley St, quite close to Tower Bridge. If you need more information, contact Alan Fleming, Sydenham, London, UK who posted information about the place.
