8394 | Year of naturalization 1900 MANY TRIBUTES TO LATE W.H. POLLEY Obsequies Largely Attended Service at St. George's Church on Sunday The remains of the late William Polley, Jr., reached Trenton on Saturday and were removed to the family residence on Murphy Street, from whence the cortege moved on Sunday afternoon to St. George's Church for service. The church where the deceased attended as a boy and young man was filled with his many friends, who gathered to pay the last tribute to his memory. Many friends, fellow workers of the C.P.R., and brother Masons of both Toronto and Montreal joined with his numerous Trenton friends in attending the obsequies. The Church of England service was conducted by the Vicar, Rev. A. L. McTear. Rev. Canon Armstrong, Rector of St. George's Church for so many years and an intimate friend of the deceased and family, read the lesson. The choir rendered appropriate music and Mr. G. H. Cobley sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought." The pall-bearers were his intimate friends of Toronto. The honorary W. A. Bleecker, R. G. Weddell, W. H. Ireland, H. F. Whittier and W. House. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and covered his grave in St. George's cemetery. W. H. Polley, aged 43, former city ticket agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway, died early yesterday after a serious illness extending over a period of eight months, at his home at 60 Fermanagh Avenue. The funeral will be held from the home of his parents in Trenton, on Sunday. St. Alban's Lodge, 514, A. F. and A. M., of which he was a member, will have charge of the service. The body will be shipped to Trenton to-day. A Masonic service will be held in his home in Toronto at noon to-day. Mr. Polley began his railroad career as a clerk at the Union office in the Kind Edward Hotel, succeeding Christopher Bunting later as agent. In May 1913, he was appointed traveling passenger agent for the Canadian Pacific and in October, 1913, assistant city passenger agent. In December, 1918 he was appointed city ticket agent but was forced to leave his position in October on account of an illness which became aggravated, later causing his death. He is survived by his widow and four children, William, Alice, Gordon and Robert; a sister, Mrs. A. Maguire, and his parents in Trenton, where his father is employed in the customs office. Mr. Polley was a member of the Western Golf Club and was deservedly popular among a very wide circle of acquaintances. Witness at wedding: 007383-99 Harry Niles JARMAN, 24, L'Amable, Trenton, Mail Clerk, s/o John C. JARMAN & Elvira NILES married Sarah Elizabeth SPURR, 23, L'Amable, same, d/o Benj SPURR & Mary HILL. 8395 | Year of will is hard to make out, it is 186? but it looks to be 1863. This would be weeks after Augustus' death which would be a reasonable time to rewrite his will and would explain the great detail that goes into explaining the care for Augustus' widow. Hard to read all of it, but these are the points I've extracted: To Mary his wife, all pictures, prints, household goods, wines, liquors, provisions, chattel and effects whatsoever other than money and securities for money. For my son Edward, sons in law William Leaf and John Kinnersley Hooper the sum of thirty thousand pounds. Instructions for investment follow, instructing investment in government bonds/stocks from England, Wales, Great Britan, the East India Company, any Railway Company, Gas or Water Company in Great Britain that would pay a dividend. Mentions protection from liability. Mentions his partnerships in the warehouse business. Becomes hard to read again but there is a mention of Ellen Bradbury his sister?? (could be the wife and widow of Augustus) and something about payments of 20 pounds. He then goes on to mention something about properties and then gets into mentioning his two sons Edward and John, his two daughters Emma and Marion and the widow of his late son Augustus. This is the first indication that John might be alive but somehow largely excluded from the will. It goes on to talk about the income from investments and the widow Ellen and providing for her from those funds. Further mentions of Ellen comments about "one fifth" mortgages, securities etc. It then goes on to talk about the son(s) or daughter(s) of the late Augustus reaching the age of 21 or having married will do something with the "one fifth" that Ellen had. "Share and share alike" is used. (a couple of pages are devoted to the widow Ellen and her children). There is then further mention of his son John and the (remaining?) one fifth share that is clearly mentioned as his (this would make sense since there is a division by 5 and that would indicate that John was still alive). It is hard to read but after many readings it seems to refer to the fact that his son John may die in his lifetime and if that were to happen that "said share (1/5) of my estate shall be retained and applied for by" (the three executors). So it appears that John was not expected to survive and hence was not named as one of the executators and is included in this manor. It further makes comments about the widow of John "if she should survive" this could mean he was married or could be a provision in the event he was married as no widow is named. It goes on to talk about Augustus again and the fifth share seeming to indicate that the same rules apply if John were to have a widow. Then talks about if Edward were to die and leave a widow, much of the same here as to be expected. It gives further instructions to deal with if he is still a partner in the business or has retired near the end. | BRADBURY, John Esq (I644)
