| 7554 | Stanley changed his name to Allan Stanley later Allan Was Born in West Ulverston, Tasmania, he come to Queensland about 1937, the story goes that he borrowed a mates motor bike and never took it back, as far as we know, this was about the time he changed his name from Stanley Leonard to Allan Stanley, we have been told he didnt like the name Leonard, said it was sissy. Allan boarded the SS Taroona 3 April,1937 coming over the Bass Straight to Melbourne, he must have come up to Brisbane straight away, as he worked as a carpenter helping to prepare for the 1937 exhibition, in Brisbane, he then got a job as a photographic assistant in a little studio in Adelaide Street, opposite Anzac Squqre, he then took over the studio, and it may have been about this time he hired Ruby, later to become his wife. Allan then went to larger premises, two rooms, one for sales, and one for developing, he called it" Candidgraphs", Room 9, second floor, Rothwells Chambers, Edward Street. Brisbane city, Allan was living in "Wyreema", Upper Edward Street, City, Ruby and Allan were married in 1939, Ruby gave up work when she was expecting there fist child, Allan Blair, Allan then had problems getting photographic equipment, the war was starting, and later on he had to give up his business. Allan then went to work for Peters Ice cream, he was working here when Gay was born, she was almost reared on the ice cream, she still loves it today. Allan then joined the RAAF, he enlisted 16 Jan 1943, and he started out as a trainee technition, flight rigger, fitter 11A, then went on to Aircraftman, Leading aircraftman, he never went overseas, or took part in any fighting, he took photographs on survey flights mainly north Queensland, he was discharged on demobilisation 16 Dec 1946, in amongst all this, Marie Dawn was born. Allan then bought an old nash utility with his graturity pay, and went into business again for himself, doing house renovations and alterations, it couldnt have been very successful, as it was around this time that he tried his hand at tram driving, around Brisbane, he then went back to carpentry, working for Tristrams soft drinks, while he was here, he was offered the chance to demolish an old house, Ruby and Allan bought 8 acres of land at East Archerfield, but had to pass it up, as it was to close to the sanitary dump, so they were offered 4 acres in exchange in West Archerfield, which they took, it was prime land, so they demolished the old house, and used the timbers to build there home, Tristrams stood by to help Allan, they let him have a labourer at there expense for two weeks, and lent him a truck to cart the timbers away. Ruby, Allan and there 3 children, and Eda moved into the home about 1953, Allan stayed with carpentry, helping to build the Mater Mothers hospital while working for Morris and sons, and working for other firms over the years like Kratzman, among others, they lived at Richie Road, West Archerfield, later to be changed to 60 Wadeville Street, Pallara, then they changed it again to what it is today, Doolandella, Allan Died in 1989, he was a good father, very loving husband, and very much missed today. | JOHNSON, Stanley Leonard (I12692)

There is not actually a regiment known as the Scots Fusilier Guards, but there are the Scots Guards and the Royal Scottish Fusiliers, so I commenced my search by checking the discharge papers for both of these regiments as follows: WO 97/1378, Scots Guards, 1855-1872 WO 97/1861, Foot Guards, 1873-1882 WO 97/1461, Royal Scots Fusiliers, 1855-1872 WO 97/1948, Infantry, 1873-1882 The records for the period 1873-1882 are divided into Foot Guards and Infantry as opposed to specific regiments. There were no papers for Frederick in any of these sets of documents. I then searched the muster rolls of the Royal Scots Fusiliers (also known as the 21st of Foot) for the period 1869-1870. The musters of the 1st battalion were held in WO 12/3838, and those of the 2nd battalion were in WO 12/3863. Frederick did not appear in any of these musters. I then searched the musters of the Scots Guards for the same period, held in WO 12/1872, and Frederick was present throughout the set of musters, which covered April 1869 to March 1870. The battalion was based At Home. Frederick was Private No 1683 until 21st October 1869, when he was promoted to Corporal vice (in place of) Trump. Frederick did not appear on the Married Roll of the musters. This does not mean that he was not married, but it means that his wife was not accompanying him in the barracks. I then traced the musters backwards and found that Frederick enlisted on 29th December 1865. The voucher number next to his name was 7, which denotes that he was recruited in the Gloucester area. This information was held in WO 12/1868. I then jumped forwards to find when Frederick discharged. I searched the musters of 1875-1876, held in WO 12/1878, but Frederick was no longer listed at this time. I then searched backwards and found that he discharged by purchase, whilst still a Corporal, on 5th June 1871. He was stationed in London at the time and paid £18 in order to discharge. He had served for a period of 5 years and 5 months. I then searched the relevant Non-Effectives page, which was held together with the above muster in WO 12/1874, and this showed that he was born in Worcester and that his trade upon enlistment was that of a gilder. Frederick did not appear on any of the Married Rolls contained within the musters. I also noted in the muster of 1870-1871, held in WP 12/1873, that he was on furlough (vacation) from 17th to 25th January 1871. The battalion was stationed in London and Dublin during this muster. Finally, I searched the Regimental and Chaplains’ Returns of Births and Marriages, but there were no relevant listings for the time of Frederick’s service. I checked under both Edmonds and Edmunds, although Frederick only in fact appears under the former spelling throughout the musters. John appears from the internet entry ID1352 to have died in 1914 in Wharfedale, Yorkshire. No other details appear to be known about him. The only record I have of Spearpoints crossing the atlantic is in 1877 on the SS City of Richmond from Liverpool to New York (18 June). The manifest lists Mary Spearpoint aged 24 "wife" and John Spearpoint aged 1 "infant". I don't know who they are unless baby John was the Spearpoint (son of Ingram and Caroline Isabella Cogan) who died in Rosella, NSW Australia in 1938. But I cannot trace Mary." Ann was born in 1851 the year after Isaac and Sarah's marriage on 26th Dec 1850. Ann and John then had my grandmother and also a son. Then the rest gets woolly. Apparently Ann either died in England or in the US, but the story is that they emigrated to the US in the late 1870s, but that Annie was sent back to England around 1880 care of the purser and we thought that father John stayed on in America with his son, that is until we noted his death in Wharfedale in 1914 (I must get the death certificate). Annie was brought up by the Snowdens in Sheffield until she met Bertie Johnson and married him there on 24th November 1894. The only record I have of Spearpoints crossing the atlantic is in 1877 on the SS City of Richmond from Liverpool to New York (18 June). The manifest lists Mary Spearpoint aged 24 "wife" and John Spearpoint aged 1 "infant". I don't know who they are unless baby John was the Spearpoint (son of Ingram and Caroline Isabella Cogan) who died in Rosella, NSW Australia in 1938.
