| 7108 | Some believe that he was from Cougnes, La Rochelle but there is no documentation to support this. Michel Boudreau arrived in Acadia before September 21, 1639 when he is mentioned as being one of the first syndic (official law officer) in Port-Royal. Although, listed as a farmer in the census of 1671, we find him mentioned as the Lieutenant Gouverneur civil et criminel (magistrate) in the 1686 census. He gives up this position to Mathieu de Goutin on August 20, 1688 following a King's ruling dated March 30, 1687 stating that Michel Boudreau was rendered too old to perform his duties. He would have been around 87 years old. Michel Boudreau passed away sometime between 1688 and the census of 1693 where his wife, Michelle Aucoin was listed as a widow. | BOUDREAU, Michel (I23751)

| 7119 | Sometime after the birth of Kirby in 1895 the family went to New Zealand. While there Charles hooked up with a Mrs Smith also known as Georgina Baldwin (1862-1916) and upon return to Australia Charles was confronted by Marion's brother Arthur Ryeland who tried to take one of the children and slandered him in public. The slander case was dismissed but revealed that Charles had sold property to Georgina and that she had been put in charge of looking after the children. Marion is left without any financial support and has to live with her mother while Charles has the children with Georgina. Marion succeeds in getting financial support but Charles, Georgina and the kids leave for London in 1900 where he bigamously marries Georgina. In 1901 a warrant was issued in Australia for leaving his wife. Georgina dies in 1916 and Charles leaves for France where he marries again in 1918 and later dies in 1948. | 7125 | Son of François dit Nordest Pitre and Anne Préjean le Breton, Jean-Baptiste was born in 1711 in Port-Royal. He was only 14 when he lost his father. He was married on October 28, 1733 to the nineteen year old Cécile Boudreaux. Although this marriage took place in Port-Royal, the following year the young couple lived in the Parish of Saint-Charles des Mines in Grand-Pré. It is there that their son Michel is born in 1735. By 1737, their young family is living in Beaubassin. The fact that Jean-Baptiste & Cécile moved farther inland with their families was a symptom of the times they were living in Acadia. The Acadian population was growing fast much to the concern of the British authorities, Acadians were forced to find new areas to settle. By the end of the 17th century, new settlements developed in Les Mines (Grand Pré) and later in Beaubassin. Like Jean-Baptiste's father, many acadians had taken the oath of allegeance to the King of England between 1719 and 1730. Because of this oath and the fact that they lived under British Authority, the Neutral Acadians were no longer trusted by France. Also at that time in history, Britain distrusted all catholics and felt that Acadians could ally themselves with France in a conflict. This left our ancestors in the precarious position of being mistrusted by both political powers. From 1749 to 1755, the increase of English settlers in Nova Scotia added tensions for the Acadians. The native Micmacs who conducted raids on the British settlements, were said to have close links with the Acadians. England wanted Nova Scotia as their territory because of its strategic military location. The Governor of Massachusetts coveted this area for its access to Québec and the French Fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island. Louisbourg was the commercial and administrative centre of the French Colonies in Acadia at the time. These would become the decisive factors in the eventual Deportation Order. Escape from Deportation Acadians in the areas of Memramcook, Chipoudy, and Petitcodiac rivers were hearing rumors of deportation in August of 1755 and on the advice of their Missionnary L'Abbé François Le Guerne, hundreds took refuge in the woods of what is now part of New Brunswick. They were forced to remain hidden in the forest as the British authorities had put a price on their heads. Some of these Acadians were successful in reaching their destinations but many died along the way from starvation & exhaustion. Jean-Baptiste Pitre and his family were among 200 Acadian families from the areas of Memramcook, Chipoudy, and Petitcodiac rivers who had followed this advice and hid in the forest. They were fortunate that Charles Deschamps de Boishébert, a captain in the French colonial regular troops, was nearby. Accompanied by a group of natives, the 125 French soldiers surprised about 200 English soldiers who were about to set fire to the 250 houses in Petitcoudiac. Both L'Abbé Le Guerne and Lieutenant Boishébert are credited for having ensured the survival of the Acadians. The acadians foresaw the second phase of the expulsion of 1758 and Jean-Baptiste Pitre's family accompanied others up the coast to Miramichi in 1757. Exhaustion and lack of provisions took its toll on the Acadians and many died of starvation. As a result, several decided to follow Boishébert's troops recalled to Québec for the winter of 1757-58. Unfortunately, the circumstances in Québec City were not much better. The war had brought on a lack of supplies and famine, the Acadian refugees became an extra burden and were fed cod and rotten meat. It is said that these unfortunate living conditions caused the death of many Acadians. There are approximately 1,500 Acadian refugees when the City is hit by a smallpox epidemic. Already weakened by their journey, hundreds succumbed to this illness. Jean-Baptiste Pitre and his family were among this ill-fated group and on June 9th, 1758, our ancestor passed away in Quebec at the age of 47. | 7126 | Son of Jean Pitre and Marie Pesselet, François dit Nordest was born around 1682 in Port-Royal. He was still young in 1690 when Phipps and his Soldiers arrived in his region. At the age of 11, in 1693, he lost his father and his family lived through difficult times. By 1697, peace returns to Acadia with the Treaty of Ryswick , which makes Acadia French soil again and the New Englanders leave. François lived during the period considered as the Golden Age of Acadian History. At the age of twenty-three, François Pitre marries Anne Préjean in Port Royal on July 27th, 1705. The young couple settles in Port Royal where all their children are born. François Pitre and Anne Préjean are not found in the census of 1707 or 1710 but it is most likely that they lived with or near Anne's family. They are listed on the 1714 census as the immediate neighbours of Jean Préjean dit le Breton. After five years, this family finds itself in danger again when the New Englanders seized Port-Royal. Even with the resistance of 258 soldiers, the Fort was lost in mid-October of 1710. The 481 inhabitants again surrendered to the English. Three years later, by the Treaty of Utreck in 1713, Acadia becomes Nova Scotia but the surrounding Ile Royale (Cap Breton) & Ile St-Jean (P.E.I.) and part of what is now New Brunswick, remained part of France. Acadians were given the right to practice their religion, own and keep their properties, but they became British Subjects. As British Subjects, François Pitre and his family lived a relatively peaceful life for the next few years. However on December 6th, 1725, François passed away leaving his wife and ten children in mourning. He married Sarah Spearpoint on April 11, 1826 in Folkestone, Kent, daughter of Henery Spearpoint and Sarah Matson. Notes for Edward Pettit: 1. Edward Pettit died in 1856 and his age was given then as 49. (Sorry - he was away from home in the 1851 census, so that gives us neither his age nor his place of birth.) 2. Edward Pettit was a Coastguard and his service record (extracted by Yolande Dunn) is as follows : ADM 175/78 Register of Nominations for Appointments - 1833. This says he was born in Plymouth and his wife born in Folkstone. ADM 175/6 Establishment Book Folkstone Feb 1833-May 1834 (2 entries) (Dungerness - proposed move to in April 1834 that was cancelled) No 2 Battery, Dungerness Dec 1838-June 1842 (There is a gap in dates June 1834-Dec 1838 but he moved to No 2 Battery from Folkstone and I could find no interim entry so assume that he was in Folkstone for this period. ADM 175/7 Establishment Book Sandgate Jun 1843-Apr 1849 Lydd Apr 1849-July 1850 Preston, Weymouth July 1850-July 1853 Langley July 1853-Dec 1853 Enchantress Dec 1853 Death 13.1.1856 3. There is a record of the birth of an Edward Pettit on January 11, 1807 in the parish of St Charles the Martyr, Plymouth. Parents are Edward and Elizabeth Pettit. The Plymouth parish of East Stonehouse has not been searched, but most of the surrounding ones are on the on-line IGI and show no trace of him. I think that I am happy to take the 1807 record as the right one. 4. Note that I have searched the Devon FHS index of marriages for anyone who might be Edward's parents. Whoever they are, they certainly weren't married in Devon. 5. This obviously leads us back to Folkestone, where Edward Pettit and Elizabeth May (m.1805) are eminently suitable candidates for his parents. This is all the more suitable given that three of Edward's children have the middle name of 'May'. I think that I have to pencil these in fairly firmly. 6. The middle names of the children are very interesting ie. Spearpoint, May, Boxer and Milton. Spearpoint is obvious and comes from his wife's maiden name. As yet I have no clues whatever about Milton. The Boxer bit could have come from the Eliz Boxer who married a Tho Pettit in 1748 or the Sus Boxer who married Tho Spearpoint in 1744. Unfortunately both seem a little distant - it would be nice to find someone closer. Note that Edward Pettit (snr) was a widower at the time of his marriage to Elizabeth May. As yet, I have found no trace of his first marriage; was there a Boxer connection here ? 7. The witnesses at the marriage of Sarah and Edward were Sarah Pettit and Richard Hart. There are plenty of Sarah Pettits around to choose from. Canada we pin down Richard Hart ? The good news is that we have a Ric Hart in Folkestone who is second cousin to Sarah Spearpoints father. The bad news is that there were 6 Richard Harts born in Folkestone between 1733 and 1767, and between them they are probably related to everyone in the town. Unfortunately, since the contents are very uninformative, it doesn't really matter a lot. Never mind :- here it is. However, there do seem to be a lot of people missing. I do not think that the cen sus data published covers all of Folkestone. There is a Mary Fagg aged 19, the daughter of Ma tthew Fagg and Ann (chr 18 Jan 1822 Folkestone). a number of possibilities 1. Ann is Mary (perhaps Mary Ann, the Ann after her mother) 2. Ann is the daughter of Matthew but was elsewhere is 1841 3.Ann belongs to one of the other Folkestone Families (e.g. in 1841 there is Charles 68 & Sus annah 67 with John 21 and Mary 23; Thomas 64 & Mary 63; Abraham 55 & Mary 40, with Abraham 9 , Burt 14, Thomas 6 and Sarah 1) but was elsewhere 4.
