4803 | Lloyd Vernon Ferris sailed on the last of the sailing ships on the Great Lakes. He was injured by a piece of equipment on board ship, resulting in a ruptured appendix. He did not receive treatment as they were too far from port. He survived, but in his later years developed cancer at the site of his injury. He was away from home for months at a time, while all three of his children were born. After leaving sailing on the Lakes, he took a job with Peterson Builders Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. In the 1950's, he bought a 40 foot schooner with a hole in the hull. This was the Grampus. The Grampus was placed on scaffolding on the lot adjoining the home on 5th Street. There he worked on her off and on for his remaining years. He always spoke of finishing her and sailing up the St. Lawrence Seaway, down to the Panama Canal, and to the Pacific. The neighbors did not like having an "eyesore" in the neighborhood. There was much documentation in the Door County Advocate regarding the numerous petitions to get Lloyd to remove the boat. The neighbors were afraid their children would be hurt by falling off the boat where they played. Lloyd's reply was their children should not be tresspassing on his property in the first place. When the neighbors took the case to court it was thrown out as Lloyd had had the foresight to register the boat with the Coast Guard. As it was a Coast Guard vessel, it could not be touched by the town. Lloyd and his wife moved from the big house to a bungalow on 9th Street, but retained the lot with the boat on it. When Lloyd became ill with intestinal cancer,he moved to Canal Road and was taken care of by a cousin, Hazel Delair. When he died, the boat on 5th Street was vandalized and destroyed during the night and the keel and equipment were stolen and never recovered. Lloyd's funeral was conducted by Davis Mortuary with burial in Bayside Cemetery in Sturgeon Bay on Bayshore Drive. | FERRIS, Lloyd Vernon (I12336)

4823 | Long time choir member, Betty Ryeland retires By Richard Baker About forty years ago, Peter and Betty Ryeland moved from Sault Saint Marie with their four children to take up residence in Aurora. Shortly thereafter, Betty joined the choir at Trinity and brought her considerable musical talents and love of Anglican liturgy to enrich the music programme, which was then under the direction of Ruth Harris. Both then and for many years thereafter, she was the choir's soprano soloist and would from time to time perform a solo recital. It was also the start of an enduring friendship with musicians Illtyd and Ruth Harris, and Betty always enjoyed visiting the beautiful "English Country Garden" at the Harris house on Mark Street and spending time in the summer with them at their cottage in Parry Sound. After Ruth retired in 1972, Betty continued in the choir with subsequent directors Greg Paskaruk, Richard Baker and Tony Browning, always making a substantial contribution to the musical life at Trinity. It was a very difficult decision that she made to retire from the choir due to mobility problems, and she misses being part of the Adult Choir immensely. Our music programme has that effect on people! The parish offers her our heartfelt thanks for all that she contributed and continues to contribute to the life of Trinity. Went to live with her parents with her two sons while her husband went to Canada to find work before going over to join him.
