THE SUICIDE OF A DERBY HOUSEKEEPER.
The fifth and last inquest was on the body of Eliza Jephocote, aged 53, whose death occurred under sad circumstances. - James Bradbury, a slater, of 53 St Helens Street, said the deceased was his housekeeper. Last Friday, he left home about a quarter to six in the morning. She was then lying on the sofa in the front room. He returned home for his breakfast at a few minutes to eight, and found the door fast. He opened it by shaking it. Upon him getting into the home he found the deceased hanging by a rope behind the back door. She was quite dead, and he went at once for the police. The rope produced was the piece that was used. Deceased fetched it from out of a room at the top of the house. Deceased had been much troubled by her daughter, who was 18 years of age, running away from home about 10 weeks ago. She had often asked witness to fetch her back, but witness told deceased not to trouble about her. Deceased had been drinking rather heavily of late, but he had not heard her threaten to commit suicide. - Police constable Whitaker spoke to being called to the house on Friday morning. He cut her down and found that she was dead. There was a chair not far off, and witness was of the opinion that she had stood on the chair to fasten the rope to the back of the door, and then jumped off it. The Jury returned the verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane.
