3051 | DEATH OF CAPTIAN W. H. GATES The death occurred on Thursday last week, at Horsham, of William Henry Gates, M.B.E., the well known cross-Channel Service captain, in his 78th year. He retired in 1931, and had been ill for about eighteen months. He was the eldest son of Mr. John Gates, one of those who was with Captain Matthew Webb on his successful Channel swim. He went to sea in sailing ships, and visited all parts of the worth before joining the Railway service in April 1894. He was promoted master in February, 1912, and ended his sea service in August, 1924, when he became Dockmaster, finally retiring in January, 1931. When Captain Gates was the Chief Officer of s.s. "Dover" in 1908, he went away in charge of a volunteer crew to the aid of the Norwegian vessel s.s. "Pilsen" which was foundering in the Channel. The whole of the crew were saved by this timely assistance. The seas were so terrific that when the boat returned to its own vessel only two sound oars remained, and the boat had to be abandoned. For this service Capt. Gates received the Norwegian and French Life Saving Medals and the Emden Medal. An exciting adventure befell Capt. Gates when in command of the "Queen" when returning empty from Boulogne on October 20th, 1916, after one of its troopship voyages, for the vessel was met by enemy destroyers. When about three miles off the Varne, Captain Gates was ordered to stop, the signal being a shell across the bows. He promptly threw the ship's papers and the troopship number overboard and before the German officers came aboard was able to disguise as a member of the crew a British Officer by dressing him in oilskins and a sou'wester. He was ordered to abandon the ship, which was afterwards sunk by time bombs. Two hours afterwards the crew was picked up by a trawler. For his services during the war Capt. Gates received the M.B.E. and the Order of Leopold II. The cremation took place at the Erighton Crematorium on Monday, when there were present Mrs. W. H. Gates (widow), Mr. Frederick C. Gates, Mr. W. H. Gates and Mr. R. V. Gates (sons), Mrs. Stoneman and Mrs. A. Ryeland (daughters), Mr. Stoneman (brother-in-law), and Mr. J. Williams. The ashes are to be scattered in the Channel. - Dover Express Friday 25 June 1943 | GATES, William Henry (I2897)
