Thomas Carter White moved his family from Otterton to Hemyock a distan ce of some 25 miles in 1909. My Grandfather Thomas Arthur Ham White (Thomas Carter White's eldest so n) told me the story of the move when i was a child. He told me that he (aged 10) and his father walked the farm animals from t heir old home, Houstern Farm Otterton to their new home, Culmpyne Bart on at Hemyock. His mother and younger sister Marjorie both drove horses and carts with th eir furniture, clothes and the younger children on the back. He said "we l eft at first light and didn't get there until it was nearly dark. I can re member that my legs were aching and i was so tired.
