2001 | Betty passed peacefully at Hilltop Manor in Cambridge, with family by her side, at the age of 98. Beloved wife of 60 years to the late Gordon, and loving mother of Lynn and the late Donald. Cherished Nana of Timothy (Elana), Jonathan (Erin), and Sarah (Neil). Treasured Great Nana of Jackson, Elizabeth, Aaron, Carys and Quentin. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her sisters Marguerite and Catherine, and her many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sisters Marjorie and Rive, and brother Bob. A small service will be held this summer at the place Betty loved and that held a special place in her heart right to the end, Camp Koinonia. In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Betty's wishes, a memorial fund has been established with Camp Koinonia. Betty was active in changing many lives through Camp Koinonia, including those of her own family. She made it known that her wish was for funds to be raised to further the camp's mission which was so near and dear to her heart. 2008 | Bill wrote to his Dad on May 24, 1944: "It is one year since I got worn into the Army & believe me it has been quite a busy year. And now here I sit on the eve of an invasion "ready" for battle. When it comes, it is going to be plenty tough & alot of fellows will be dead. What I am afraid of most is not death; but being hit & suffer a permanent injury or ailment....In the army you find out what a home really is and what it means. Thanks for the home & thanks for everything." On July 25, 1944 Bill wrote:" Have to start saving me a little money after this leave. for I've got a strong hankering to take Medicine if I can rise t the occaion. You'd know what I meant if you were in Normandy." A major wrote to his father Bill about his death on Sept 10,1944: "The company ws making an attack on a strongly held German position when we came under some very heavy mortar fire. Not with standing, "Kotch" as he was affectionately called by all of us, contnued to lead his platoon forward to his objective and he had just reached it when he was killed instantly by blast from a mortar bomb that felll within a few yards of him. We buried him in a little glade near where he fell together with some oh his men who were alos killed. Our padre conducted a service over them.... Kotch's men have asked me to say that never will they have another platoon commander who they will follow with the same confidence." The finest tribute I can pay is to say that to have 30 men with such implicit faith in you that they will follow wherever you lead is a fine memorial to one of the most honest, goodlooking men I have ever known." | KOTCHAPAW, John (I37299)

2009 | BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES GEORGE HILL DETLOR Member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada, 1841-6. Concerning his ancestors George H. Detlor said: "My grandfather, John,V. Detlor, emigrated wi th my grandmother from Ireland to New York. Directly after his marriage in the City of New Yo rk they removed to the town of Camden, where they resided with their family, and at the clos e of the rebellion (having joined the Royal Standard) he, with two or three of his sons and s ons-in-law, came to Canada, and finally settled on lands in the township of Fredericksburgh , lot number twenty-one in the sixth concession, where he and his sons lived and died. My fat her moved to the Town of York (now City of Toronto) in 1802; and at the invasion of that plac e by the Americans, in April, 1813, my father lost his life in defence of the place. There i s now but one of my grandfather's children living; an aunt of mine, Mrs. Anne Dulmage, reside s in the village of Sydenham, township of Loughboro, county of Frontenac." These words were u ttered over forty years ago. In 1836, at the last general election before the union of Uppe r and Lower Canada, George H. Detlor and John S. Cartwright were returned in Lennox and Addin gton, and held their seats during the troublesome period that followed. Mr. Detlor, at the ti me, was a merchant in Napanee. After retiring from politics he was for a time clerk of the un ited counties of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, and later on was appointed Collector of Cus toms for the port of Kingston. | DETLOR, George Hill (I5104)
