1912	Barbe Bajolet - Three times a widow The following register has been translated from the parish registers of Pineau on May 22, 1608 : This baptism may seem unimportant, but Barbe went on to become one of the first woman pioneers in Acadia. She was also a very enterprising woman of her time. After 16 years of marriage and the death of her first husband Isaac Pesseley in Acadia, Barbe returned to France with her children. As compensation to the colonel's widow, the king grants her some fur pelts which allowed her to live well in France. 2nd Marriage - Sieur de Monstespy On December 16th, 1646, we find Barbe Bajolet at La Rochelle, France where she married her second husband, Martin Lefebvre, Sieur de Montespy and Secretaire Ordinaire of the Money Chamber of King Louis XIV. The church marriage ceremony was held on the 10th of January 1647. In 1652, Barbe was still in La Rochelle when her second husband died, leaving two more children. 3rd Marriage - Admiral Savinien de Courpon On October 17, 1654 in St-Jean-du-Perrot, France, she married a man she had known from Acadia, Savinien de Courpon (who was a close friend of Chomedey de Maisonneuve). This last husband of Barbe had a previous history of his own. Savinien de Courpon was in the Caribbean between 1641 and 1648 where he was taken prisoner by the Turks. France arranged his release in exchange for a famous Corsaire who was detained in Marseilles. Savinien de Courpon's wife at the time was the ex-Baronness Savigny. She went to meet her husband when he was finally released on the Island of Saint-Martin. Unfortunately, the ex-Baronness found him in the company of another woman. The jealous wife stabbed him in the neck with a bayonnette when he was asleep in a drunken stupor. De Courpon survived the attack and condemned the ex-baronness to be executed. Barbe Bajolet became the second wife of this widower of Nantes (Savinien de Courpon) who was Captain of a vessel. In fact, he was a retired Admiral of a fleet named 'Des 100 Associés' who transported supplies & goods to and from France and Acadia. With her third husband and children of her two preceding marriages, our ancestor, Barbe Bajolet returned to Acadia. Her family settled in Cap Sable on land conceded to them by Charles de la Tour, lieutenant-general of the south of Acadia. A few years later, Barbe Bajolet was widowed again when Savinien de Courpon died. In 1661, this third time widow asked a vessel from Boston to give passage for her and her family from Cap Sable to Port-Royal. It would be soon after that her daughter Marie Pesseley would marry Jean Pitre. It was also there that she probably died after 1678, leaving numerous descendants in the families of Hervieux, Pitre, Bertrand, Amirault, Doiron, Mius d'Azy, Léger, Comeau, Girouard, LeBlanc, etc. in both continents. 1936	Beatrice May Mann remembers going to see the funeral and being ticked off for waving at the coffin. All I know about Walter Philip Edmonds (WPE). He had already died in 1938 when my parents married as he is marked as deceased on their marriage cert. He was alive in 1932; my father finished his seven year bookbinding apprenticeship in 1930 and couldn't find a job because of the depression. He was unemployed for 18 months and eventually went to work at the same place as his father (WPE) which means WPE was still working in 1932. I have a photograph of WPE and Margaret Edmonds/Vines taken in their garden (date unknown) and they are with another lady unknown to me. This lady also appears in another photograph surrounded by 4 men who are obviously related to each other. She is holding the arm or two of them but it is unclear whether they are her sons or younger brothers. Someone has written the names of the men on the border of the photograph - Keith, Jack, Phil and Will - any ideas? On WPE and Margaret Vines marriage cert (Sept 1906) the two witnesses are George Arthur Vines and Ada Minnie Vines - she is a new name to me, do you know where she fits? Also on the marriage certificate Frederick Crompton Edmonds is shown as a soldier and still alive - at least he is not marked as deceased. Not sure if that helps or hinders you Further background information - Margaret Vines, at the time of her marriage to her first husband (Dec 1890) was living at 40 Holyoake Road and her new husband at 110 Brook Street - presumably both in the Kennington, London area. Father-in-law Thomas Gosheron was already deceased. My father was quite a forceful character and did not discuss his family ever within my hearing, which is why I thought there wasn't any!
