I believe this was the Alice Ryland who nursed with Edith Cavell at the Berkendael Institute in Brussels. Edith Cavell was court marshalled and shot by the Germans in August 1915 when charged with harbouring refugees and helping 150 of them to escape. Alice married a Dutch bulb grower and settled in Norfolk, England. She died at some time in the 1950's intestate and her estate was shared among the five surviving children of her brother, William Ryeland, our grandfather, following an advertisement in the national press. Each received around 2,000 pounds.
