    Charles Ashbee, eldest brother of Eliza Harriet, was a dray driver for Leneys Dover Brewery. In winter with snow and ice he recounted how with four horses on one occasion the journey from Dover to Canterbury (15 miles had taken three days putting up over the night

    Notes:

    Harry emigrated to Australia but before becoming established, the Great War broke out and he enlisted in The Australian Light Horse and found himself in the expeditionary force which landed at Gallipoli in the sea of Mamara, Turkey.

    He there contracted dysentery caused by contaminated water and was sent home and demobilized (lucky man).

    He suffered from time to time all his life.

    Toby formed Watersend Condiments with H A J Ryeland (1930) a factory making horseradish sauce, mint jelly, etc under OK brand in old stable accommodation at the back of Bassingham Court, Dover. Being a bit of an engineer, designed some of his own machinery. During World War II spent some time in the Midlands tuning Rolls Royce MERLIN engines for spitfire fighter aircraft and later set up a factory at Coldred, Dover, to make very light launches to be fitted to tanks.

    After the War, returned to Watersend Condiments which was eventually taken over (1955) by Masons and then Colmans of mustard fame. After his death in 1958, Bassingham Court was sold.

    Edna May (Maisie) worked in the Post Office as a telephonist before marrying Henry Arthur James Ryeland (Shipping Agent) in 1925. They had two sons, Roger Banfil and David Charles. Maisie looked after Bassingham Court during WW2, running the house accommodation for high rank officers, Army and Navy, with Ryelands all living in the stable block to get our of Dover and avoid German shelling from France.

    Ivy Freda (Trix) also helped in the business and served in the WRENS during WW2 at the naval airbase in Donibristle in Scotland, receiving the King's Commission. After her mother's death, she kept house at Bassingham Court, Temple Ewell, Dover where Charles and Eliza had bought in the late 20s / early 30s. Then, after Toby's death moved to Chance Cottage, Guston, Dover, followed by 14 Danes Court, Dover and finally Kearsney Manor Nursing Home.

    She had a very active interest in the Girl Guide movement in her 20s and 30s.
