    b. say 1745, d. 1788. He was in Orange Co., New York, at the birth of his son Philip about 1771, and the name of Philip Roblin appears in a list somewhat vaguely described as comprising "the individuals who held a town office of some kind ... from 1765 to 1775 ... in Cornwall, Bloominggrove and Monroe," printed in Eager's Outline History of Orange County (1847). The three towns referred to lie in the south-east part of the county, and Cornwall was the home of his father-in-law. The names of Philip Roblin and his presumed brother Owen Roblin appear side-by-side in an undated but contemporary list of refugees "bound for Nova Scotia," his family consisting (besides himself) of one woman and four children. Next, the names of Philip and Owen Roblin appear close together in an undated list, presumed to be from 1784, of Loyalists in "Quebec" (which then included present-day Ontario), Philip being called a carpenter, and his family consisting of one man (himself), one woman, one male child over 12, 2 males 6-12, and 2 females under 6 years (another daughter having evidently been born since the family's arrival in Nova Scotia). His Loyalist petition, presented at Montr

(Research):Stephen Roblin says he was born in New Jersey. Philip Roblin says he is a "native" of America to me this says they were born in the US. We know that Philip came to Orange County from Bergen County. I do not believe that any of them were born in either England or Wales. I have seen nothing that supports that. Our earliest Roblin was in America by 1722 and owned land in PA. He lost his land due to unpaid taxes and disappears by 1727. I believe this Owen Roblin is either the father or grandfather of our Roblin group. There is a baptism in New Jersey of a Catherina Roblin Jun 5, 1741 by Owen and Rebecca Roblin.....this could be the same Owen that was in PA or it could be a son. In addition there is a Peter Roblin who family say came from PA to South Carolina and received a land grant there in 1741. DNA testing about 2 yrs ago indicate that this Peter Roblins is related to the families of both Philip Roblin and Owen Roblin.....though his name has changed over the years to Robling. The land he held in SC was named Roblyn's Neck. I believe that the Owen Roblin of PA and Peter Roblin are related and could be brothers.

Petition for land - Stephen Roblin June 16, 1797...wherein he said he was born in state of New Jersey. Granted 300 acres 24June 1797.

In his claim he says "he was at Sorell in the Fall of '83. Is a native of America Resided in Orange Co. .....

There is a family in Wales that interests me greatly as it has the names of our New Jersey/New York Roblins and the names of Peters family.....his son names his son Lewis, which is a unique name for the Roblin family.

Ann who is suppose to have married Nicholas Wessels was suppose to have been a sister to John and Stephen who came from New Jersey. We have never had any proof that she actually existed. We do know that Nicholas was married to Ann Smith, that we have proof of. So though I have kept Ann Roblin as Nicholas's first wife, there is no proof.

I believe there is another sister for Stephen, John and Ann. This is based on the treason charged against Stephen....he is identified in those charges as "Stephen of Harrington Twp, Bergen" May 1783 Maria Roblin of Harrington Twp married Cornelius J. Westervelt. Because they both lived in the same twp and the name Roblin is not common I believe they are siblings. There is also a Catherine Roblin who married Yellis/Giles Mandeville abt 1795 in Wantgo, Sussex Co but I have no idea of how she fits into this. And there is an Abraham Roblin b. 1764 who lived in New York and died Sept 29, 1820, who had a son Edward. Abraham died while in the military when a bridge collapsed in Westmoreland, NH.AS you probably know, Edward the brother of Owen and Philip seems to disappear, no one has traced him. I find it very interesting that Abraham names a son Edward. The story goes that Edward went to Nova Scotia, but I believe that is incorrect. Owen and Philip are on a list of settlers going to Nova Scotia but went to Ontario instead and I think that is where that story comes from. Edward is not on that list with them.

Re Edward, you ask where he is found there are several mentions of him in Orange County records, He was a known member of the Claudius Smith gang and there is an amusing story of him being jailed and talking the jailors daughter into helping him escape. If you simply google Edward Roblin of Orange County New York you will come up with a whole list of articles about him. He has been considered the "bandit" of the Roblin family but Philip too was arrested for his activities, people do not seem to know that.

Sept 1782 List of Refugess bound for Nova Scotia (Loyalists in the American Revolution, Loyalists in the Southern Campaign, Volume III, Refugees - pg 392)
    Philip Roblin 1-1-4
    Owin Roblin 1-1-4
Richard Smith 1-1-1 (son of Claudius Smith)
George Galloway 1-1-2 (witness for Philip Roblin's land petition)

I am a Wessels descendant, my grandmothers mother was a Wessels. Nicholas Wessels was suppose to have married Ann Roblin. Nicholas's sister, Sarah married John Roblin. Until recently we believed that Sarah died in 1817 or 1821 (can't remember) this is incorrect. It comes from the belief that Sarah left her property in PE Co to Stephen Wessels, this also is incorrect. In 1817 (I think it was registered 1821) she sold the property to Stephen. Sarah went on to remarry and had another child, she did not die until 1840. After her death her husband and her son John Roblin tried to reclaim the property she had sold, which by that time was in the hands of Owen Wessels who helped him develop the property and build a church on it. They were not successful and John Jr died before the case was finished.

It is also believed that Owen Roblin Jr and Elizabeth Roblin were the children of John Roblin and Sarah Wessels, This too is incorrect, I wrote a proof that Owen Roblin was the son of Owen Roblin Sr years ago and I think that is accepted at this point. The fact that Elizabeth is not a child of John and Sarah has not been as widely shared and I am not sure how many people know about this. I have a proof for that as well....the basic fact is that Sarah was not old enough to have been Elizabeth's mother.....there are other things as well that indicate that Elizabeth is the "missing" 4th child of Owen Roblin Sr who came to Ontario with 4 children, two over the age of 10 and 2 under the age of 10. If you have any interest in this I can share that with you.

Well, this has not proved to be such a "quick" response but that is it in a nutshell. I do not support the birth of any of our Roblin's as being from England or Wales. I do believe that they came from Wales but that the parents of our Roblin were here before the birth of our oldest known Ontario settlers.

Will take a look at your poster later, I am presently working on the Stickle family and am in the process of selling my house and arranging to move out of the US.

You say...Based on British records that have recently come online, it does seem more and more like Owen, Ann, Philip, John & Stephen were all siblings and that their father was Philip (bef.1725-aft.1769) with Owen's mother being Grace Meredith, possibly dying in childbirth and the other four's mother Anne Meredith (probably Grace's sister, maybe a twin). Have you info that would put this interpretation into question?

I would be VERY interested in what records you refer to,....I know another Roblin researcher has put together a theory that our Roblins were born in England but I think it is wrong and that he is manipulating what information he has to make it fit his theory and have told him as much and have not heard back from him again.

I have about ten online trees on Ancestry....and do have some of my Roblin information there: 1) Owen Roblin Tree..http://person.ancestry.com/tree/63886267/person/44111206480/facts and 2) John Roblin and Sarah Wessels Tree http://person.ancestry.com/tree/71033516/person/42227975890/facts

    Notes:

John Roblin, the eldest son of the Pioneer's family, was among the first converts under Darius Dunham's labours in the province, and became a zealous worker for the Methodist church and a popular local preacher, he could not sit in Parliament. His constituency re-electing him, his seat was again declared vacant by the same party and for the same reason. Returning home, he was elected for the third time; but he died before the next session commenced, and thus evaded that which threatened to become a serious cause of dissatisfaction, if not of disturbance.

    Birth:
Some sources suggest 2 May 1774 however that puts him too close to his brother Owen's birth to be reasonable. Also only one son was over the age of 12 in 1783, that would have been John in this case/

Philip Roblin moved from Adolphustown into Sophiasburg, where he located his land at Roblin's Mills, or Green Point, on the High Shore. In addition to clearing the forest, he managed to build and work a grist mill, which proved not only a success to the enterprising miller, but a boon to the settles for miles around, saving them their long and toilsum trips to Kingston, and later to Napanee. The founder of Roblins Mills, or Green Point, married Prudence Platt, by whom he had nine children; many of his descendants lived to be distinguished men and women of their county. A son, John P. Roblin, was for a number of years a prominent member of the old Reform party in the Upper Canada Legislature, sitting both before and after the Mackenzie Rebellion, sixteen years in all. He was defeated only once, and that was in 1837, when the cry of Liberal disloyalty was raised; but at the next poll he was elected by a sweeping majority. Notwithstanding that the Premier, Mr. Draper, was a Conservative, he appointed John P. Roblin Registrar of Prince Edward County, a position he held up to the time of his death.

Philip Roblin owned the following lots in 1790 Con 4 Lot 24 Adolphustown - 50 Acres Con 4 Lot 25 Adolphustown - 50 Acres Con 1 (West of Carrying PL) Lot 2 Sophiasburg - 200 Acres Con 1 (West of Carrying PL) Lot 34 Sophiasburg - 150 Acres

Philip was born in Smith's Clove but moved with his parents to Adolphustown, via Sorel during the fall/winter/spring of 1783 and 1784. There is a record of him marrying Prudence Platt in 1792 in Sophiasburg Township. He appears to have applied for, and been granted, 200 acres of land as the son of a UE Loyalist. Finalized by order-in-council on July 31 of 1797, this parcel was southwest of Green Point on Long Reach. It was rectangular in shape with waterfront and stretched back past the current highway 49 just north of the junction with highway 35. The lakefront view is spectacular.

There was a stream on the property, fed by a lake since drained, which was just west of the junction of highways 35 and 49. This stream, which fell about 100 feet from the lake to Long Reach, was used to provide power for a grist mill, lumber mill, and shingle mill (according to the residents of the land in July 2001). This area became known as Roblin's Mills (often described relative to Green Point to distinguish it from the Roblin's Mills that that became Ameliasburgh town) and had a store, barn, large wharf for loading products of the mills into ships, and at least two houses (Philip and Prudence as well as their son Caleb.). In July 2001, the barn was in use as a garage/workshop (although moved perhaps 100 m from its original site) and the store was a part of a house. The stone foundations of the mills, as well as the raceways for the stream, were also clearly visible. The area can be accessed by driving down Roblin's Mills Road, at the junction of highways 49 and 35, and

    Notes:

In the returns of disbanded troops and loyalists mustered on the 5th October, 1784, appear the names of Owen P. and Philip Roblin; from which it is to be inferred that each of these pioneers served in the British cause, and, owing to the liberal policy of the Government in granting two hundred acres of land to each United Empire Loyalist, were each in possession of large tracts of land. Owen P. Roblin, who was born in 1774, married Mary Dulmage, who was born in 1780. They settled in the Bay Front in Ameliasburgh, about half a mile east of Rednerville. The property is now in the possession of Hamilton Welbanks, as George Roblin, to whom it was left, sold out and bought from the Government two hundred acres in the second concession of Ameliasburgh. The latter place, which is near the Centre Church, is now owned by George E. Roblin, a grandson of Owen P. Roblin.

    THE GREAT DROWNING

From the Napanee Beaver, April 30th, 1897

Probably the most memorable drowning accident that ever occurred in this county was just in front of the old Adolphustown Methodist Church, on Sunday morning, August 29th, 1819. Though nearly seventy-nine years have since elapsed, and every one who ever witnessed that sad catastrophe has long since passed away, yet the remembrance of it still remains fresh with nearly all the descendants of the families of those days.

The circumstances were substantially as follows; There had been a great revival in the Methodist societies in nearly every part of his county that year, and the preachers then in charge of the Bay of Quinte circuit, Revs. Isaac Puffer and James Wilson, had arranged for a special quarterly meeting in the Adolphustown church for that day. A quarterly meeting at that time was almost sure to bring out a number of the zealous people from every society in the county. Those from all parts of North Fredericksburgh and the northern part of Adolphustown had to cross Hay Bay in small boats; the bay just opposite the old church is about a mile and a half wide. Barnard Cole and his family lived across the bay from the church; he owned a pretty large, skiff which was quite a rarity then, as the old time log canoes were much in use. That Sunday morning more assembled to cross at that place than it was safe for even his large boat to carry.

Some, it is said, would not venture in the boat at all, under the circumstances, and some who did so got out again and strongly urged their friends to do so. Among the latter was the late Gilbert Bogart, who died years ago at his farm at Riverside, on the Deseronto road now owned by Mrs. R Thompson. Feeling there was so much danger he went away crying because he could not prevail on his brother Peter to get out also. Peter was one of the victims. They were both young men at that time.

The morning was calm and beautiful; there was scarcely a ripple on the waters of the bay, and the owner of the boat had full confidence in its capacity to carry all its precious cargo, and more too. He strongly urged all to get in. Four of his own family were among the number, three of whom escaped. His son, the late Conrad B. Cole, who died an old man in North Fredericksburgh a few years ago, was one of the survivors, and has frequently told the writer of the events of that memorable day, and pointed out to him the exact spot where the boat filled and the drowning took place. It is not to be wondered at that every incident in connection with that catastrophe was indelibly fixed in his memory to the end of life.

There were eighteen in the boat all of whom, with the exception of Barnard Cole and his wife, were young people. They were all members of the Methodist church, and most of them recent converts. Everything went smoothly and pleasantly at first and the young people had been singing hymn after hymn among the popular revival hymns of those days. When half way over it was found the boat was leaking very freely and settling lower in the water in consequence. A bailing dish had been forgotten, and the men at the oars began to pull with all their strength, seeing the danger that thus threatened them. Finally it occurred to one of them to use his Sunday hat for bailing purposes, but by that time the water was pouring in too fast to be thus got rid of.

    THE CALAMITY OCCURS

When within about forty rods from shore, Peter German, one of the young men, said to the others he was a good swimmer and would jump out and swim to shore, and thus lighten the load. In doing so he thoughtlessly stepped on the edge of the boat, tipping it so that water poured in over the top. That alarmed the already much frightened young women who suddenly leaned to the other side, settling it so much that the boat at once filled with water, partly upsetting at the same time. Of course now all was confusion and dismay. The young women, who could not swim struggled and clung to each other and in this way they were all drowned. Peter Bogart, one of the young men, though a good swimmer, is said to have been carried down by some clinging to him whom he was trying to save. John German, who was also a good swimmer, turned back to help when he heard the cries of his sister but she had sank beneath his reach when he got there. He then became so bewildered that he did not attempt to swim to shore again, but swam around and up and down the bay until he sank exhausted. His body was found some distance from the others, and was not recovered until the next day. Those who had enough presence of mind to cling to the boat were kept floating until help came, but ten of the eighteen were drowned.

    SOME OF THE INCIDENTS

Years ago, every family about the bay had its store of incidents to tell about that great drowning. It would require a volume almost to have related them all. It is said that the preliminary prayer meeting had began and one had just prayed "make this a day long to be remembered,: when the first shriek was heard. Rev. Isaac Puffer was in charge of the meeting and looking up, he at once saw the terrible struggle only a few rods away from the church. He at once called out "our friends out in the bay are in distress," and all rushed out on the banks. The church stands within a few rods of the water's edge. The scenes on the shore are represented to have been even more heart rending than those in the water. Some were witnessing the struggle of their own children or near relatives. Some tore their hair or their clothing in their agony. Some are said to have rolled on the ground in their agony, others seemed paralyzed at the sight. Prayers and appeals went up to God from the hundreds thus assembled. Boats were near by and soon several were called out to the rescue. Seven were picked up who had been clinging to the boat. One, Mrs. Cole, was found floating on her back in the water, past consciousness, but was resuscitated soon after. She lived many years after and used to frequently say that she found drowning easy and painless, but the agonies of resuscitation were such that she wished they had left her as she was. Some of the others were also restored with considerable difficulty but all the survivors lived many years.

    THE VICTIMS

The names of those drowned will be found in the verse here appended. The first named, John and Jane German, were young people of the same family, children of Stophel German, a local preacher and one of the first subscribers for the building of the church. The late Nathan German of North Fredericksburgh, George German, of Gosport, and Mrs. Wm. Vallear of Richmond, were members of the same family. Their parents witnessed the terrible scene from the shore and the agony of the mother was said to have been dreadful to witness. She was a beautiful singer, but never was heard to sing again though she lived nearly forty years after. They lived on the north shore, on the beautiful farm now owned by Mr. James Jaynes. Peter Bogart's parents lived next farm, Abraham and "Polly" Bogart, the latter of whom lived to be over a hundred years of age. The large and well know Bogart family, of Adolphustown, were all of the same family. Our townsmen, Messrs. G. Bogart, postmaster; J.M. Bogart, and Marshall Bogart, of "Riverside" are all nephews. It is said that Peter Bogart and Jane German were to have been soon married and it was in striving to save her life he lost his own. Mary Cole lived next farm, the daughter of Barnard Cole, already referred to. She was soon to have been married to Joseph Johnson of Prince Edward, near Picton, who was also one of the company that day but survived. She had a presentiment of some such sudden death in a dream the night previous, and told Mr. Johnson of it in the morning. Mary and Jane Detlor were from North Fredericksburgh, and lived on the farm now owned by our townsman, W. Nelson Doller, Esq. They were connected with the Detlor families now living in Napanee and this vicinity. Betsy McCay also lived in the same vicinity, on Little Creek, she was a sister of the late Asa McCay, of Clarksville, and A.B. McCay, Esq., who lived and died on the old homestead. Huldah Madden lived on the boundary line between Fredericksburgh and Ernesttown, a concession north of where the Morven brick church now stands, near the farm of Robert Collins, Esq. She was a sister of the late Stauts S. Madden, father of Mr. W.D. Madden, of Napanee, and Wm. Madden, York Road, who died a few months ago. Matilda Roblin was a member of the large Roblin family still residing in this county, but where she lived we do not know. She was a sister of the late David Philip Roblin and Mrs. Geo. H. Detlor. Betsy Clark, was, we believe, a daughter of Elias Clark, on the "back bay" of Adolphustown, a family well known to all the old residents. So far as we can ascertain they were all of U.E. Loyalist families.

    RECOVERING AND BURYING THE BODIES

Burger Huyck, living on the north shore, on the farm now occupied by Samuel Hawley, his son-in-law, was an expert fisherman and had a fishing seine. This was at once got and brought over. It was cast about the scene of the calamity and at the one draw, eight of the dead bodies were brought to shore. The ninth was got soon after, but it was not till the next morning that the body of John German was found, as he had swam some distance off before he finally sank. The church was at once transformed into a morgue; of course all the regular services for that day were broken up. Carpenters were at once got and the work of coffin making began - there were no professional undertakers in this country then. Word went speedily around and the absent friends soon began to arrive. The next day the funeral took place, the ten coffins all being placed in a row outside of the church. Such a concourse of people had gathered that the church could only hold a part of them. The preacher was Isaac Puffer, then a well known "circuit rider" here, who afterwards went to the States, where he lived and died. He was a very eccentric man and knew every chapter and verse of scripture by heart, and could readily quote any verse, or tell at once where any quoted passage could be found. The writer well remembers hearing him preach to a large congregation in the same church during a visit to his old time circuit, late in the forties. He was then a venerable and gray haired old man. So affecting was that funeral scene that, over and over again would the preacher break down and nearly the entire congregation break out into sobbings and tears.

Eight of the graves were side by side in the old burying ground just opposite the church. The ninth was laid beside some other member of her family. One, Mary Cole, was buried on the north side of the bay in the well known burial place there, on her father's farm, where nearly all the earlier settlers of that section found their last resting place. Strange to say there does not remain anything now to mark even the spot where all these memorable graves are, though the ground is in a good state of preservation. It is said, however, to be located about the middle of that historic old "God's acre."

The following lines were composed and printed soon after and sold in separate slips by the many hundreds.. At one time, there were few houses in all the old Midland district in which copies could not be found, and nearly all the young people for two generations committed them to memory. We doubt if any other production, crude as it is, was ever so extensively read and committed to memory in this part of Upper Canada. The Beaver has formerly published them but as many are still asking for them they are again re-produced in these columns. Some have attributed their authorship to Isaac Files, then a school teacher in Prince Edward, Rev. John Carroll, Mr. Playter and others claim they were written by Alexander Shorts, who lived and died in Richmond, a few miles west of Selby. Our friend, W. S. William, Esq., now of California has informed us it was his father, the late Isaac Williams, who was well known to many in Napanee some years ago. He was then a young man residing near Picton.

    THOMAS W. CASEY

A BALLAD ON THE DEATH OF TEN YOUNG PEOPLE, DROWNED IN HAY BAY

Come all you good people, of every degree, Read over these lines, which are penned down by me. And when you are reading these lines, which are true, Remember this warning is also to you.

In the year of our Lord, 1819, On the 29th of August, on Sunday I mean -- The place where it happened I'll also put down, But the loss I can't tell of , in Adolphustown.

These people were all in good health and in prime, All modestly clothed in apparel so fine, -- To Church they were going, their God to adore -- To reach the said place they had Hay Bay to cross o'er.

The boat being small, and their number eighteen, To go over together they all ventured in; -- They launched away singing a sweet excise, Their moment near by them was hid from their eyes.

The voice of Jehovah speaks unto us all; Always to be ready, to go at his call, And when you are reading these mournful lines o'er, Death may be sent for you, and enter your door.

The boat being leaky, the water came in To bale with their hats, they too late did begin. They looked at each other and began for to weep. The boat filled with water and sank in the deep.

Their friends on the shore then for help flew with speed, And eight of the number from the water they freed; There were brothers and sisters and parents also, Soon heard the sad story, which filled them with woe.

A seine was preparing to draw them to land Their friends all a-weeping, around them did stand; Such cries and lamentings were never before, The loss was so fatal, that none could restore.

There were John and Jane German, Peter Bogart also; There Mary and Jane Detlor, in the waters below; There was Matilda Roblin, and Betsy Macoy; Betsy Clark, Huldah Madden, and the said Mary Cole.

To the unchangeable regions their spirits are fled. And left their poor bodies inactive and dead Their friends with loud weeping around them were found, Their bodies preparing to enter the ground.

On the Monday following, their coffins were made, And into the same their dead bodies were laid, And solemnly borne into the Churchyard; Their graves, in rotation, for them were prepared.

A large congregation, on that solemn day Assembled together to visit their clay; To join the afflicted in their mournful state, And also to comfort in sorrow so great.

A sermon was delivered on that solemn scene, By Sir Isaac Puffer, form Job 19; Although these vile bodies the worms may destroy, They shall see God in glory in fullness of joy.

The sermon being over, and brought to a close, And some words of comfort were offered to those Whose hearts were quite broken and filled with grief, And in a few moments these bodies must leave.

Their coffins were open to all public view, That all might behold them and bid them adieu; And then to convey them to the silent clay, No more to behold them till the judgement day.

And now we must leave them beneath the cold ground; Till Gabriel's trumpet shall give the last sound; Awake! Thou that sleepest, and arise from your tomb, And come forth to judgment to hear your last doom.

    Notes:

Roblin's Mills at Sophiasburgh had one of the best mill sites in the County. Five mills operated within a half mile. The water was diverted from mill wheel to mill wheel by sluices. There was a mill at the edge of the cliff, below it stood the original Roblin mill called the Cooperage. Further down were two mills run off the same wheel-one for sawing and one for grinding. The waters from this mill were carried by overhead sluice to the last mill which stood near the bay. This one is known as Levi Roblin's Mill. Levi built his home on the dock because he loved the water. His mill was run by the pouring water from the sluice over a paddle wheel and it, in turn, worked an arm which turned a flywheel. The Roblin mills were adjacent to the shipyards. - from

Levi drowned himself in the muddy pond behind the big red barn that can be seen from his tombstone at Fish Lake. Apparently, in his old age, he and his second wife Elizabeth Osbourne had no "means" to live on. But his sons by his first wife would not support their step-mother. So the old folks were separated and one of her girls took Elizabeth Osbourne Roblin in. But old Levi was lonesome without her and committed suicide.

    Notes:

Roblin Mills was dismantled and reconstructed as part of the Black Creek Pioneer Village near Toronto, where it still grinds out flour. - built by Owen.

Another leading member of the family was Owen Roblin, a son of Philip. He was born in Sophiasburgh, and, after receiving his education under Jonathan Greely, removed to Ameliasburgh, where, in 1829, he took up four hundred acres in the third concession. This land is in part now held by W. J. McFaul and H. G. Staffordshire; and the latter lives on the old homestead. Owen Roblin conducted a general store and ashery, doing a large, and profitable business in sending the lye to Montreal. In 1838, or 1839, he traded lot 76 with John B. Way for lot 81, where the Ameliasburgh Roblin's Mills and homestead now stand. The village of Roblins Mills, or Ameliasburgh, as it is officially known, was first called Way's Mills, and was situated in the bend of the horseshoe below the hill on the present village stands.

On taking possession of the Way property, Owen Roblin commenced to improve the water-power; his first act was to excavate the present canal from the lake. The extent of this work may be estimated from the fact that the blasting powder alone cost the equivalent of one thousand dollars. Besides farming five hundred acres, and attending to his many trading schemes and flouring mills, this busy man ran saw and carding mills. From his flour mills he shipped immense quantise of wheat and rye flour to Montreal; and during the Crimean War he exported day and night.

Owen Roblin was a Justice of the Peace and Commissioner for taking affidavits; and for many years was a County Councillor and Reeve of his township. A post office was first opened in the village by a man called Meacham, who was Postmaster there for three years, when he was promoted to Belleville; and the Roblin's Mills' office was closed. It was reopened in 1845, with Owen Roblin as Postmaster, who held the post until his death, when he was said to be the oldest Postmaster in Canada. He was succeeded by his grandson, William H. C. Roblin, the present Postmaster. This grandson also closely followed Owen's son, Edward, as clerk of the Fourth Division Court, the interim holder of the post being William C. DeLong.

One of the best known and most progressive men in the county, Owen Roblin, lived to the old age of ninety-seven years, only dying as recently as 1903. He married Huldah Selden Conger, a daughter of old Squire Stephen Conger; she died in 1896, aged eighty-five years.

    Obituary:
Mr. Roblin was an active, promising young man, aged twenty five years. His loss will be long and deeply felt by all with whom he was acquainted. How true it is, that "in the midst of life, we are in death!" (Com. Sophiasburg, February 15, 1835)

    Obituary:
Melancholy Occurrence - On Wednesday last (the 11th inst.), as Mr. Caleb Roblin, son of Philip Roblin, Esqr., of Sophiasburg, was crossing the Mohawk Bay, to the former place, with a load of oak lumber, his horse and himself fell through the ice, where all were unfortunately drowned. He had in company with him a young man by the name of Peter Wood, with another team, which was also lost; Wood only making his escape. Diligent search was made for the body of Mr. Roblin by the surrounding neighbours, (to whom his relatives feel themselves under heavy obligations for their kindness and humanity), but having toiled till after midnight they abandoned the search till day light, when the corpse was found. His funeral took place on Saturday - a very impressive discourse was delivered on the occasion by the Revd. Mr. Marcus from these memorable words: "Jesus wept." His remains were followed to the grave by a numerous assembly of friends and acquaintance.

    Notes:

On the decease of Philip Roblin Sr., Philip Jr., his son, who died in 1899, inherited the estate and succeded to the business. Soon after his father's death he built the third grist mill at the head of the ravine, near the bridge where the road crosses, a fine, three storey modern structure, which over-shot water wheel, seventeen feet in diameter, with three run of stones. He also erected a large storehouse just across the road, which was ultimatly connected with the mill by an overhead gangway. He likewise added a complete saw mill equipment to the lower mill, operated both by steam and water power, and in various ways enlarged and increased it till the milling business here expanded to one of the most extensive in Canada. Large consignments of flour were for many years shipped regularly from these mills to foreign lands, until Roblin's Mills became for a time a leading comercial centre in the country, and a considerable lake depot, with storehouses, shops and docks for convenience of shipping.

Ackley World Journal - Feb. 16, 1922 James Roblin Died at Waterloo/Early-Day Resident of Ackley - Buried Here. James E. Roblin, for several years a resident of Ackley, died at Waterloo, Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Four weeks ago, at the time of the joint installation of Masonic and Eastern Star officers, and the subsequent banquet, Mr. Roblin was present and , as a one-time Whorshipful Master of Fountain lodge A. F. & A. M., he was one of the number who was presented with honorary past Masters' badges. Stricken Very Suddenly Although not well enough to take to his bed, Mr. Roblin gave up his work in the treasurer's office (he had been employed there during the past two years) two weeks ago, hoping a rest would restore him to his wonted vigor. He was able to be about the huse each day and yesterday visited with friends. He was stricken from the fatal attack only a few minutes before he died. Mr. Roblin was born Jan 30, 1851, at Belleville, province of Ontario, Canada. When he was 11 years of age his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Roblin, moved to Ackley IA. That was in 1862 when the town was new, and Hardin county was only sparsely settled. James learned the plasterer's and mason's trade, but did not follow it long. When only a young man he became associated with the American Express company. For several years he was clerk in the office in Waterloo, then in charge of Mr. Button. In the Days of Gold Fever His first experience as messenger was on the Illinois Central railroad, between Chicago and Sioux City. His work as messenger between Missouri Valley, IA., and Deadwood, S.D., at the time the gold fever was at its height in the Black Hills, yielded some interesting experiences. He and the other trainmen were heavily armed to repel any attack by robbers to seize the stores of gold, which were transported on nearly every trip. Mr. Roblin frequently spoke of the picturesque appearance of the people and the scenes about Deadwood in the days when life was held of little worth by bandits of the James and Younger brothers type. Robberies were common and murders frequent. Wa Veteran Master Mason Mr. Roblin was for 50 years a Master Mason. He was the oldest master of the lodge at Ackley. He was among the 10 oldest of the commandery Knights Templar at Waterloo, who conducted a ritualistic service at O'Keefe & Tonnes" undertaking rooms. The remains are to be brought to Ackley, Thursday morning, to be buried here. The funeral service is to be under direction of Fountain lodge A. F. & A.M. Deceased was 71 years of age.

The Roblin family were for many years residents of Ackley, the senior Roblin having been engaged int he mercantile business here. The deceased is the last surviving member of the family. The early girlhood days of the deceased were spent here and she is well remembered by many old friends of the family. Her age was about 60 years. The remains of Miss Roblin were brought to Ackley for interment, this (Thursday) forenoon. Rev. charles W. Baxter, pastor of St. Mark's Episcopla church, Waterloo, was here and conducted funeral services; some relatives and close friends were also in the city.
