Egyptian Expeditionary Force was formed in March 1916 to command the growing British and Commonwealth military forces in Egypt during World War I. It was originally commanded by Sir Archibald Murray, later by Edmund Allenby. It consisted of the British XX and XXI Infantry Corps, under the command of Generals Philip Chetwode and E.S. Bulfin, respectively, along with the Desert Mounted Corps, four (mostly Australian) cavalry divisions under Australian Lieutenant General Sir Henry George Chauvel.

The force initially consisted mostly of British and Egyptian troops, but most of these were sent to the Western Front in early 1918 to help repell Germany's Spring Offensive. In the meantime, new troops were then dispatched from India, Australia, and New Zealand, and Anzacs in particular made up a large portion of the army. Though it was feared that mostly Muslim Indian troops might desert and join Turkey (who had declared a jihad against the Allies early in the war), this fear proved unfounded, as the Indians fought valiantly on the front lines of most of the army's major engagements. The force also included a small contingent of French and Italian troops. The forces of the Arab Revolt, led by Prince Feisal of Mecca, were also unofficially attached during Allenby's Damascus offensive.

The force's role evolved from a defense of Egypt to the invasion of Palestine which involved: the capture of Beersheba and Gaza in October-November 1917 (see Third Battle of Gaza), entering Jerusalem on December 11, 1917, and Allenby's successful campaign of 1918, resulting in the defeat of the Turks at Megiddo, and the capture of Damascus, Beirut, and Aleppo, ultimately forcing Turkey's exit from the war.

Northampton Street ran from New Bridge to Commercial Quay. Completed in 1854 and previously known as 'Up the Pent', it was named after the Earl of Northampton, Lord Warden in the time of James I who persuaded James in 1606 to take control of the harbour from the town and set up the forerunner of the Harbour Board. Prior to this road being built it was called Pentside and owners of Snargate Street properties could, at high tide, come out of their gardens and get into a boat. The General Post Office was once in this street as was the Sailors' Bethel and the Wellington Hall, which was a popular public assembly place before the town purchased the Maison Dieu as the town hall. The street was closed in 1950 to provide more quay space.

    HEAD MASTER'S NOTES

Summet' Term, 1928.-The Summer Term will commence on Thursday, 3rd May, and end on Wednesday, 25th July, 1928.

...I was equally deligDted to be pleasantly surprised, one morning, by the arrival of a most handseme solid silver Challe':lge Cup from the brothers F. ]., F. G., and E. Ryeland-Capt. Ryeland's three sons, whose' careers at School we remember with the greatest pleasure. They were, as might have been expected, particularly interested in and devoted to the Royal Engirieers School Cadet Company, with whose progress and success they were closely connected as responsible non-commissioned officers. For such service we were much indebted to them, and now they have increased that debt to an extent and :in a manner difficult to repay. Their gift has been handed on to the School Cadet Company as a Cup for Shooting. The Rio Tinto Mining Company of Huelva, Spain, have secured the :services of the eldest brother, Francis John, to whom I have :bad the pleasure of writing, recently, a congratulatory message upon his marriage. I know he will be glad to hear from other .contemporaries at his address: Vista Alegre I, Minas de Rio Tinto, Huelva, SPain.

    1st CADET COY. C.P.(F.) R.E.

Mention must also be made of three other ex-cadets in connection with the Ryeland Shooting Cup, a most handsome silver trophy which the. three brothers Ryeland, C.Q.M.S. F. J. Ryeland, Serjt. F. G. Ryeland and Serjt. E. Ryeland, have presented to the Corps for an inter-section musketry competition. The Corps is extremely grateful for this generous gift, and has done its best to show its gratitude by commencing to compete' a:t once for the Cqp. The scheme of the competition is as follows :-Each of the. sections will fire on its allotted day throughout the year, at the end of which each will hand in its six best individual targets, the trophy being awarded to the section with the highest aggregate. This competition has, indeed~ aroused such enthusiasm that ~e problem now is to pay for the ammunition used by our zealous, aspiring marksmen.

(Medical):I cannot quite remember whether it was in Zambia or Malawi, but think Zambia. Sometime around late 50s early 60s he suffered a tragic accident whilst using explosives in the quarry and was paralysed from the waste down with no feeling in his legs. He then came to England with wife Mary to see if anything could be done. I visited him in Hammersmith hospital and met Mary.

The treatment was unsuccessful and he returned to Africa. Not sure where or when he died but I think he sold up and pretty sure they have moved to South Africa. Mary certainly lived on in South Africa later and kept in contact with the occasional Christmas card etc.

On June 6 1944 LCT 947 was landing on Sword Beach and had the first Officer to be killed in the landings aboard at the time.

    https://sites.google.com/site/frimleyandcamberley/frimley-and-camberley-2nd-world-war-1939---1945-memorial/arthur-dennis-bradford-cocks-1904---1944

Arthur was Killed in the Action during the assault on Sword Beach, D-Day, gaining the distinction of being the first British Officer Killed in the Landings.

On D-Day Arthur was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 5th Assault Regiment Royal Engineers. They were a specialist unit equipped with converted vehicles such as the so called 'Hobart's Funnies' intended to clear the beaches and make exits onto the first inland road.

    Arthur was aboard LCT-947 (109) which carried 2 Crabs and 4 A.V.R.E (converted Churchill tanks) which he Commanded from the A.V.R.E named Plough. An account given by Lambton Burn a Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who was aboard LCT-947 wrote the following;

" Shells are bursting all round. They are not friendly shorts from bombardment warships, but vicious stabs from an enemy who has held his fire until the final two hundred yards. He is shooting well shooting often. Mortar shells whine and burst with sickening inevitability. An L.C.T. to port goes up in flames.

There is a sudden jerk as our bows hit the beach. Down goes the ramp, with Sub-Lieutenant Monty Glengarry, R.N.Z.N.V.R. [Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve] and his party working like madmen at the bows.

There is a roar of acceleration and Donald Robertson in Stornoway [the first Crab, which managed to disembark] is away like a relay runner.

Dunbar [the second Crab] moves forward. Colonel Cocks leans from his turret [he had elected to command from the Plough] and motions the other tank-commanders to follow. But enemy fire is now concentrated on us. There are bursts on both sides and then snap two direct hits on our bows followed by a third snap like a whip cracking over the tank hold.

The First Lieutenant is flung sideways against a bulkhead and lies stunned. Dunbar stops in her tracks slews sideways blocks the door. Another and greater explosion as the bangalore shafts of Barbarian [the Log Carpet A.V.R.E., with Captain Fairie in command] explode with a flash of red.

Colonel Cocks is killed as he stands, and there is a scream from within his tank. Cold with anger, Tom Fairie moves Barbarian forward tries to edge Dunbar to the ramp but fails. He vaults from his turret and is joined by other tank-men who strain furiously to bring chain and tackle to bear."

The badly damaged LCT-947 (109) made a difficult return to England where the troop vehicles and survivors were transferred to another LCT, eventually reaching Normandy later in the month.

Mk4 LCT 947(i) [15] was 'Leader' of the 45th LCT(AVRE)(j) Flotilla assigned to the 5th Assault Regiment, Royal Engineers. Only one tank managed to disembark LCT 947 that morning. The second tank in line carried Commander Royal Engineers, Lt Col ADB Cocks. As the tank moved forward, the LCT took three direct hits in her bows. The tank lurched sideways and stopped in its tracks, blocking the exit. Despite frantic efforts by engineers and the forecastle party, it proved impossible to move the tank out of the way, so the remaining tanks on board could not disembark. A greater explosion soon followed, when pipes packed with dynamite on board a neighbouring AVRE 'Carpet
