He was a gardener and is described in the Cottingham Essays as:-
Newgate - "On the opposite side (to Cottingham House), too, was Leghorn Cottage, where Mr Grantham the gardener lived. Here, Mr Edwin Wright, the head gardener at Thwaite House, had a shed which he used as a garage. Mr Grantham had the house free, as he was an old man, but he still charged Edwin Wright 10/- a week for the use of his shed. On that side of the road, all the open land belonged to Leghorn Cottage, it was called Leghorn Cottage, because they kept chickens".
I have a suspicion that the name of Leghorn Cottage was something connected to William Grantham who was transported for stealing Chickens. George had a reputation of being able to handle chickens without them making a sound. He used to put chickens to sleep as a joke to surprise friends. This is a skill which he may well have been passed down from William Grantham, of transportation fame.
George was a very good gardener and occupied the respected and lofty position of head gardener. Many tales of him have been told but one in particular which sums up the old ways is when one of George's great nieces went with their father to visit George at work. He was tending the grape vines and one child picked a grape from the vine, this was treated as the ultimate sin because the whole bunch was now not fit for the table.
His wife Sarah was known for her Victorian attitudes and intolerance of children, especially naughty or noisy ones. I was told that youngsters used to have bets as to how long it would be before they were marched out of the room by the ear and made to stand outside. I understand she had the record for this in Cottingham.

he apparently went to America to find John Thomas and Septimus Grantham, his cousins from Skidby, and stayed there a time. The story is that he decided not to stay in America and went on to Australia to seek his fortune. Nothing further is known of him. (would not match my records of him in the census)

Hallgate - Mary Grantham's Shoe Shop - "Shoes and boots lined the walls of this gloomy, small, square shop in the centre of our village. The types of boots were mostly strong working men's affairs, as we had many market gardeners around. I don't remember Wellington boots; a thick leather sole and heel were enough to withstand rain and snow, and with a good sack over your back you could, and did, carry on your work in the fields.
People I remember had, on the whole, good feet, as soil and good leather boots could breathe. Soap was good, too, and large enamel bowls were kept handy for the mustard and soapy feet made ready for changing into leather slippers after work.
Most office workers or doctors wore button boots, highly polished with Cherry Blossom boot polish. Wealthy people kept a boot boy, and Mary Grantham kept good shoes and boots for these better class citizens.
We had, of course, a smarter shop, with carpet and chairs, where the Midland Bank is now. Mother took us three girls there for Sunday shoes, for Miss Grantham was very busy with goods for everyday wear. I was always amazed at the amount of boxes, - up to the ceiling. She had a small ladder to fetch the ones at the top. I wondered how she remembered where everything was.
She herself lived at the shop with her father. She dressed in black, with her hair piled high, and a shawl over her shoulders. She never smiled, and I remember her having an almost permanent sniff. But she knew her job, her boots were good and strong, and Mr Stroud mended them over and over again, going from house to house collecting and returning them every week".

An article in the Parish Magazine states:
Walter Hall Grantham may not be a name which everyone recognises immediately but many people will know "Dick" Grantham, the removal man who lives in South Street, opposite the end of Oakdene. Mr. Grantham and his family have been carriers and removers in Cottingham for many years, and people will know Dick Grantham as the remover who does the job well, and at an exceptionally low price. He came to be called "Dick" after being baptised Walter Hall because his father's name was Walter, as those who remember the days of horse drawn rullies will know from the sign "W. W. Grantham", which the family's vehicles bore for years, and to avoid confusion his family called the younger Walter "Dick". The name stuck and most people think that is his real name. Dick Grantham was born in 1910, in the house in which he and his wife now live, into a family of four children.- he has two sisters, and had an elder brother. He has never moved from the house, nor done any other job other than removals and carrying. His two sisters live away from Cottingham and his elder brother was tragically killed in a road accident in Hull Road by a motor cycle. The accident affected his mother deeply, and Mr Grantham remembers that she was never the same after it. This happened while they were on the job, but it didn't end the business.
Dick Grantham went to school in Hallgate in 1915 in the middle of the first world war, where he stayed until he was 14 years old. However, he didn't have a
