    Notes:

Henry was baptised Henry Francis McGUIRE (no parents listed) and his sponsor was his uncle Henry McAuley. He is present with the McGUIRE family in the 1871 census (Francis and Jane) so it is very likely that he is the son of Francis McGUIRE. However after Francis' death he is always listed with the surname LAFFERTY. In his sister Mary's obituary he is listed as her 1/2 brother however earlier evidence would indicate he was her full brother as even though he had taken the name LAFFERTY he was born a McGUIRE.

Henry in baptism, 1871 and possible 1881 census. Harry on James LAFFERTY's, mothers' & brother's death certificates, 1901 and 1911 census.

Informant of death for mother & James Lafferty & brother Edward

In 1891 census it lists his father as being born in Ireland and mother born in Ontario, that would fit with both his father being James Lafferty or Francis Maguire.

Not with the family in 1881 census, likely match living with a widow Bridget SINNOTT in Cobourg under the name McGuire ***Need to further research this Bridget, possible sister to Francis McGuire, Henry McGuire was informant on her death in 1896. In 1871 census she is a stray with a different surname than the head of household, also William ORR is living with her in both the 1871 and 1881 census. It is likely that in 1871 they are living in the house of James FLANIGAN b. 1840 USA, Hotel Keeper.

The funeral was held on Friday morning of Henry Francis Lafferty one of the best known and respected residents of the York Road area and of Murray township, from St. Peter in Chains Church. He was educated in Trenton and of the Ontario Business College in Belleville, and was known throughout the Bay of Quinte area. Several years ago his wife predeceased him, and since then he has been in gradually falling health. He was a devoted member of St. Peter's Church, and was affiliated with various social and municipal groups.

Surviving him are four sons all at home, Frank, Jack, Harry, and William; and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Colborne and two daughters, Mrs. W. T. Horsley, Trenton and Mrs. W. G. Finlan, Brooklyn N.Y., Rev. Fr. O'Neill officiated during the singing of the solemn requiem mass. Interment was made in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

    Notes:

It is likely that his father was James LAFFERTY, he certainly used the LAFFERTY name in all the records I have found but his baptism lists him as McGuire, possibly because his parents were not married and the priest knew of that fact. His sister who was baptised two years earlier was under the LAFFERTY name and even listed James as her father in the record.

MANY TRIBUTES TO LATE W.H. POLLEY
Obsequies Largely Attended Service at St. George's Church on Sunday

The remains of the late William Polley, Jr., reached Trenton on Saturday and were removed to the family residence on Murphy Street, from whence the cortege moved on Sunday afternoon to St. George's Church for service.

The church where the deceased attended as a boy and young man was filled with his many friends, who gathered to pay the last tribute to his memory. Many friends, fellow workers of the C.P.R., and brother Masons of both Toronto and Montreal joined with his numerous Trenton friends in attending the obsequies.

The Church of England service was conducted by the Vicar, Rev. A. L. McTear. Rev. Canon Armstrong, Rector of St. George's Church for so many years and an intimate friend of the deceased and family, read the lesson. The choir rendered appropriate music and Mr. G. H. Cobley sang "One Sweetly Solemn Thought."

The pall-bearers were his intimate friends of Toronto. The honorary W. A. Bleecker, R. G. Weddell, W. H. Ireland, H. F. Whittier and W. House.

The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful and covered his grave in St. George's cemetery.

    W. H. Polley, aged 43, former city ticket agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway, died early yesterday after a serious illness extending over a period of eight months, at his home at 60 Fermanagh Avenue. The funeral will be held from the home of his parents in Trenton, on Sunday. St. Alban's Lodge, 514, A. F. and A. M., of which he was a member, will have charge of the service. The body will be shipped to Trenton to-day. A Masonic service will be held in his home in Toronto at noon to-day. Mr. Polley began his railroad career as a clerk at the Union office in the Kind Edward Hotel, succeeding Christopher Bunting later as agent. In May 1913, he was appointed traveling passenger agent for the Canadian Pacific and in October, 1913, assistant city passenger agent. In December, 1918 he was appointed city ticket agent but was forced to leave his position in October on account of an illness which became aggravated, later causing his death. He is survived by his widow and four children, William, Alice, Gordon and Robert; a sister, Mrs. A. Maguire, and his parents in Trenton, where his father is employed in the customs office. Mr. Polley was a member of the Western Golf Club and was deservedly popular among a very wide circle of acquaintances.

Worked 52 weeks of 1910 at 50 or 60 hours per week earning $1100 that year

In 1911 he had $2000 worth of life insurance which cost him $65 that year

(Medical):Lymphosarcoma for 4 years before death.

    Birth:
See alternate birth as more likely DOB.

The family story goes that he was born in Rochester New York when his parents were on a boat trip from Trenton to Quebec City. Born on the return trip to Trenton. However this seems to be a story created to cover up the fact that he was born before his parents were married. He is in the 1880 US census as "Willie McGuire" with his Mom living in a boarding house in Rochester. It is likely she was sent over there to give birth as it wasn't uncommon for unmarried girls to be sent away to have their children in those days. It is unclear when or where his parents did end up marrying but they are listed as married in the 1891 census.

    Alt. Birth:
The 1880 census which was enumerated on 9 June for this household states his age as 4/12 (4 months old) and also states "Feb" as the month of birth which would be consistent with being 4 months old in June.

There is a high likely hood that this was his actual date of birth and that the August date was told to him as part of the cover up surrounding his birth.

    Residence:
With his mother, under the name of Willie McGuire 4 months old (states Feb as his month of birth) Mother is also using the name McGuire.

    Immigration:
    1882 in 1901 census, 1881 in 1911 census, 1884 in 1921 census

By the time of the 1881 Rochester City Directory his mother is no longer listed, so they may have come back to Canada by that point. It's unlikely they would stay long after he was born.

Gord Polley was born on April 20

    Birth:
In his house at 60 Fermanagh Ave

    Military:
Dated 6 Oct 1943 however that date doesn't seem to make sense given his service.

Returning to Canada, Served 14 months in U.K. and N.W. Europe. Employed as an artillery surveyor with 12 FD. Regt. R.C.A. Has held rank of L/Sgt. Qualified as an artillery surveyor in U.K. Qualified as a clerk Stens in Canada.

    No Crimes.

Medium statured healthy appearing man. Above average ability. Good motivation. Anxious to return to Canada and serve in C.F.E.F.

    Religion:
"When I was 7 years old my father died and I went to live with my grandparents who lived in a town 100 miles away from Toronto. During the school summer holidays I would move back to my home in Toronto to be with my mother, brothers and sister.

While living with my grandparents I formed a regular pattern of attending Church and Sunday School and sang in the Choir.

While I was 12 years old I moved back to Toronto to live permanently and then reversed the former procedure by spending the summer school holidays with my grandparents. At that time I stopped attending Sunday School but did attend Church. The services seemed to have little meaning. At 16 I was confirmed by again although it was a moving experience I feel there was something lacking.

I as invited to attend the young peoples meetings at that Church which I did. This was where I met my wife to be.

I heard the gospel preached in Church regularly but I did not respond and resisted the invitations to attempt the Lord Jesus as my Saviour.

At the Church and young peoples we had a succession of Curate assistants. Finally a C.A. by he name of Maurice Murphy arrived and dramatic changes began to be made. As I look back I see how the Holy Sprit was at work in my life and before very long through the ministry of Maurice Murphy I was no longer resisting the Holy Sprit and the gospel messages and gave my life to the Lord Jesus. My wife to be, Betty, was also converted at this time.

During the years which followed the hand of God guided me along the path of my life and Bible study and prayer became important parts of my daily life.

I had 4 years of service in World War 2 where I was protected by the hand of God.

Returning from the war years in Europe Betty and I were married in 1946 and were blessed with 2 children - a boy and a girl both of whom committed their lives to Christ.

In 1960 I lost my job as the firm I was working with went out of business as they were no longer operating at a profit. After much prayer God directed me to start my own business which I am still doing.

In 1976 our son was killed in a car accident. Our faith in God was such we accepted this as part of His plan. At this time we felt the power of prayer as our friends upheld us before God.

The Christian life of course just goes on and on and each day there is a new opportunity to serve God. Each one of us is given certian talents and capabilities and we should be ready to be used by Him as opportunities arise. With our lives yielded to Him and praying for guidance day by day He will direct our paths."

    Basis for counsellor's recommendations:

Polley impresses as a quiet, clean-cut, efficient young man who has a clear-cut post discharge plan. Having worked for 11 years in the Advertising Department at Goldsmith's Co. of Canada where he rose to the position of Asst. Manager, Polley has his re-employment with that firm arranged. For the past 5 months he has been on Industrial Leave, during which time he was promoted to Manager of the Advertising Dept. Polley appears keenly interested in his job and feels that it is permanent employment. Considering the circumstances of his case, it is felt that Polley's plan is feasible and that he should have no undude problem in rehabilitation.

    Obituary:
POLLEY, Peter John - On Saturday, January 8, 2011, during a beautiful winter morning, Peter John Polley quietly slipped off his mortal coil. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, he will sorely be missed by his wife Pamela, his children Jessica Polley and Robert Strizic, Tim Polley and Rachel Cantelon, Megan Polley and Paul Jeffrey, grandchildren Madison, Alexandra, Mirabel, and siblings Bill and Sheila Polley, Joan and John Wright and Bev and Peter Kovac. Peter was a treasured member of the teaching staff at York Mills Collegiate Institute for over 40 years where he was very proud to be both Head of the English Department and OSSTF Branch President. Peter was an inspiring teacher and a stalwart union activist with a deep commitment to social justice and to Ontario's public education system. He was adored by his students, relied upon by his colleagues, trusted and venerated by his local union executive, and highly respected by the members of management with whom he worked over the years. Peter had a great love for language, and a keen interest in books, films, art, music nature, animals and hockey. Friends may call the Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home, 733 Mt. Pleasant Rd., Toronto, 416-489-8811, with visitation on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. Funeral Service at St. John's York Mills Anglican Church, 19 Don Ridge Dr., Toronto, on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 3 p.m. Cremation. The family will be holding a celebration of life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity. Man dies in collision of logging truck, car

A 25-year-old man was killed instantly when the car he was driving collided with a logging truck at about 11:45 a.m. Thursday on the Malahat Drive, just south of the Malahat Chalet, 16 miles north of Victoria. Dead is Donald Gordon Polley of the Malahat Bungalows, Malahat, a single man whose father lives in Toronto. Colwood RCMP said Polley was travelling north when his car crossed the centre line of the highway and collided with a fully-loaded logging truck travelling south. RCMP said the impact tore the left rear wheel of the truck's tractor part off the axle. Polley's vehicle, a Volkswagen Rabbit, spun around and came to rest facing south. It was demolished. Driver of the logging truck, Louis Reginald Shreenan of Shawnigan Lake, was not injured. Daily Colonist October 29th 1976
