Roblin Family Cemetery, Near Fish Lake In Sophiasburg

Notes:
This cemetery, Lot 17, Concession 2, West of Green Point, is situated on the site of the ROBLIN family homestead along the East End of the Fish Lake Road near Highway #49.

The family pioneer, John ROBLIN, came to Adolphustown, with a group of others in June of 1784. Although he and his brother, Stephen, wished to remain non-partisan during the American Revolution, they suffered persecution at the hands of the rebels and were forced to flee.

When John died in 1812, his wife, Elizabeth MOORE, moved to Sophiasburgh where she married a John CANNIFF. Elizabeth and her first husband, John ROBLIN had nine children. Levi, grandson of John and Elizabeth, purchased the property on which the ROBLIN homestead and cemetery are located.

Standing near the road, in front of the old homestead, is a plaque commemorating Rodmond [sic] P. ROBLIN, grandson of Levi. Rodmon [sic] enjoyed a distinguished political career, holding the positions of premier, minister of agriculture and railway commissioner for the province of Manitoba.

The sign at the entrance to the cemetery is dated 1828-1924. The earliest burial is that of Mary ROBLIN, wife of Levi, and daughter of Adam SHORTT, who died May 1828 at the age of 37 years and 5 months. A closed cemetery, the most recent burial is that of Mary E. BENNETT, 1836-1933.

Many members of the ROBLIN family are buried here along with several KOTCHAPAWS, OSBORNS and CURLETTES.

The township of Sophiasburgh is responsible for the maintenance of this cemetery.
