    • On Royal Navy records he gives his date of birth as 5 December1876 at Canton Cardiff. He signed on for 12 years from Nov1896. He was 5ft 31/4 Brown hair, Brown eyes with freshcomplexion. Has a tattoo read John Purnell of Cardiff. Initially served on Vivid II until 6 Dec 1896. His conduct was rarely more than fair. 25 Aug 1902 he was sentenced for 18 months for striking a superior officer. He was released on 24Aug 1903. On 9 Sep 1908 recovered from destertion and not claimed for further service. South African grant paid 2 November 1901. (source ADM/455) service number 284002. [2]
