Teacher at the Carrville Public School

On the building committee with Rev. Peter for St. Pauls Presbyterian Vaughan

According to Volume A of the Abstract Index to Deed Titles for Vaught Township, the Crown patent for the west half of Lot 19, originally comprised of 100 acres, was granted to George McBride in May of 1801. In June of 1835, the lot was sold to John Velie, who immediately resold the property to Donald McNaughton in November of 1835.

The 1851-52 census of Vaughan Township provided additional information about Lot 19, Concession 5. The agricultural returns for 1851 indicated that Donald McNaughton farmed 100 acres on Lot 19, 60 of which were under cultivation. The produce from the farm included butter, cheese, barrels of pork, wool, 39 yards of flannel, wheat, peas, oats, and potatoes. Donald, aged 42 years old and his wife, Isobel, aged 37 years old, were both born in Scotland. Their children had all been born in Canada, including the oldest, Ann, aged 16 years old. The family occupied a one storey log house according to the census. In 1861, the family still occupied Lot 19 according to the 1860-1861 census, however, their dwelling had changed to a one and one half storey frame house, and an additional ten acres had been cleared.

By 1871, McNaughton had acquired 500 acres, five dwelling houses and five barns and stables in Vaughan Township according to Schedule 3 of the 1871 census. His home farm remained on Lot 19 however, and in 1895, his son James was granted title of the property for the sum of $1.00. The map of Vaughan Township in the 1878 Historical Atlas of the County of York illustrated a structure on the west half of Lot 19 close to Weston Road, west of the archaeological site A1Gv-165. As the material from the archaeological site is characteristic of the early nineteenth-century, it is suggested at that 1878 Atlas structure on Lot 19 marks the location of the frame house listed in the 1861 census. The archaeological site, therefore, marks the location of the earlier log cabin noted in the 1851 census.

6475 Province loses 'tremendous premier'
Roblin hailed as visionary leader

Duff Roblin, Manitoba's 14th premier from 1958 to 1967, died Sunday evening.

The Greatest Manitoban died late Sunday afternoon almost at the moment that Duff's Ditch was once again rescuing Winnipeg

Duff Roblin, our 14th premier from 1958 to 1967, died about 6 p.m. Sunday in Victoria General Hospital with his daughter Jennifer by his side, said Roblin's longtime friend Bill Neville.

Roblin, who would have turned 93 next month, will be forever remembered for relentlessly pursuing and achieving his vision of a floodway to carry the Red River around the city of Winnipeg, a quest he launched as an opposition backbencher shortly after the devastating 1950 flood.

Sunday afternoon was one of the countless times the floodway has been operated to avert possible disaster after near-record rainfall this weekend unleashed torrents of water into the Red.

When the Winnipeg Free Press published The Greatest Manitobans book in 2008, the province's citizens named Roblin as our Greatest Manitoban.

Roblin was ridiculed mercilessly in the early 1950s, recalled Neville: "It was unnecessary, it wouldn't work, or it would cost too much, or all three."

Roblin went on to become premier in 1958, the promise of a floodway one of his key election planks. And Roblin lived every politician's dream of being derided, struggling, and eventually being vindicated, said Neville.

Vindicated indeed.

Flood-threatened communities from all over North America come here to study Duff's Ditch, provincial flood forecaster Alf Warkentin said Sunday.

The floodway was ready for the ominous 1969 flood, Warkentin said. "We've had about 10 serious floods that the floodway has protected the city from," none more potentially catastrophic than the 1997 Flood of the Century.

MR. F. J. S. RYELAND
Death Of A Plymouth
Labour Leader
Mr. Francis James Sinclair Ryeland, who died at 29, Anstis-street, Plymouth, after a long illness, was for many years secretary of Plymouth Labour Party and a prominent worker for maternity welfare and crippled children.
My Ryeland left the Army which the rank of sergeant-major instructor to the R.G.A., Territorials, Plymouth. He entered the Dockyard and threw in his lot with the Steam branch of the Workers' Union and was invited to become district organizer and consequently left the yard and took on work for the employes. The work expended, additional organizers had to be engaged, and he was promoted to the large area of Devon and Cornwall and was brought into touch with many industrial trades.
He was the first Labour member to contest Mutley (Plymouth) Ward in the municipal election of 1918, but without success. Two years later, however, in Sutton Ward, he defeated Mr. Lawrence Spear (Liberal), and during his three years on the then Borough Council served on various committees.
For five years Mr. Ryeland was chairman of the Plymouth Crippled Children's Association.

R.M.S. Antonia

Andania and Antonia were the first two of the six 14,000 ton "A" liners built for Cunard in the early 1920's.

Antonia was built by Vickers, Ltd., and launched in 1921. She made her maiden voyage from London to Montreal on 15 June 1922. She remained on Cunard's London-Canada service until 1928, when she joined Andania on the Cunard/Anchor/Donaldson joint service. Antonia, too, was requisitioned during World War II, and served as a troop transport and later as an armed merchant cruiser. She was purchased by the Admiralty as a repair ship in 1942, and renamed Wayland. She was scrapped in 1948.
