309 (Medical):I cannot quite remember whether it was in Zambia or Malawi, but think Zambia. Sometime around late 50s early 60s he suffered a tragic accident whilst using explosives in the quarry and was paralysed from the waste down with no feeling in his legs. He then came to England with wife Mary to see if anything could be done. I visited him in Hammersmith hospital and met Mary.

The treatment was unsuccessful and he returned to Africa. Not sure where or when he died but I think he sold up and pretty sure they have moved to South Africa. Mary certainly lived on in South Africa later and kept in contact with the occasional Christmas card etc.

Hemiplegia lasted one week

Apoplexy is an old-fashioned medical term, generally used interchangeably with cerebrovascular accident (CVA or stroke) but having other meanings as well.

The use of apoplexy for the term stroke is derived from the fact that many patients lose consciousness during the acute stage of the vascular compromise (either through bleeding or ischemia). It is not to be confused with cataplexy (an attack of the neurological syndrome narcolepsy).

Occasionally, the term 'apoplexy' is used to describe hemorrhaging within other organs; in such usage, however, it is coupled with an adjective describing the site of the bleeding. For example, bleeding within the kidneys can be called renal apoplexy, or bleeding within the pituitary gland can be called pituitary apoplexy.

Hemiplegia is a condition where a vertical half of a patient's body is paralyzed, i.e. one arm and its corresponding leg do not function. It is usually the result of a stroke, although disease processes affecting the spinal cord and other diseases affecting the hemispheres are equally capable of producing this clinical state.

325 (Research):
Deborah Way was born 23 Jul 1793 in Brunswick, New York. She married Johannes Kotchapaw in 1815 in Brunswick, New York. About ten children were born to them there.

Then about 1826, John, Deborah and some of their children moved to a place near Belleville, Ontario. Deborah's brother, Reuben Bedell Way, and his family and Johannes' brother George Kotchapaw emigrated with them.

They likely chose to come to Prince Edward County because they had relatives there. Jacob Ketchabaw, John's brother had moved to Hastings County in about 1813. Also, Deborah's Uncle, Daniel Way, and his sons Samuel, James and Benjamin had settled there in 1789 as United Empire Loyalists after the War of Independence.

Although Deborah's grandfather had fought as a patriot during the War of Independence, his son Daniel and Daniel's three sons chose to adhere to the crown. Likely for this reason, Francis disinherited Daniel leaving him only a token amount of money

326 (Research): Richard Emblin, was a labourer and coal hauler, who could neither read nor write. He married Jane Chivers, at Stoke Lane Somerset when he was 19. They had one child; Elizabeth Anne Emblin.
That same year, Richard was first convicted for assault and felony. In 1843 he was again found guilty of stealing hay and sentenced to six months, "two separate weeks thereof in solitary confinement". These earlier convictions were taken into account when, at age 22, on 26 October 1846, at the City of Wells Court sessions, he was given a 10 year sentence and to be "transported beyond the Seas" for stealing two donkeys. Apparently after stealing the animals in Somerset, Richard and his accomplices sold them in Dorset, claiming that they needed the money to buy a horse and cart to transport coal. As Richard had been seen in the area shortly before the animals had been taken, the authorities put two and two together and he was arrested together with his brother-in-law, Joseph Chivers. We have excellent copies of the court records including the witnesses' statements.
Although they went to jail immediately after conviction it was not until 5 years later that Richard and Joseph (who had been sentenced to 15 years) were deported to Tasmania, respectively departing England 25 February and 19 September 1851; Richard on the convict ship "Cornwall", from Portsmouth, arriving in Van Diemen's Land, 11 June 1851, Joseph on the "Rodney" arriving Hobart on 20 December 1851.
We do not know much about what happened to them in Australia but Richard's conduct record there shows he committed a number of further offences resulting in his sentence being prolonged until 24 March 1857.when he was conditionally pardoned. Joseph received a conditional pardon on 28 May 1855 and on 4 May 1863 married Many Anne Stonnell in Oatlands (north of Hobart). Unfortunately, Richard was not a witness, as they seemed to be living in different parts of Tasmania.
It looks as if Richard also might have married in Australia, but that too is the subject of further research. However, the Tasmanian Federation Index does list a Richard Embling who died at a charitable institution on 29 January 1901. His birth year was shown as 1817 which would be an approximation.
Jane is due some sympathy as she had both her husband and a brother taken from her simultaneously. At the 1861 census, 16 years after Richard went to jail, she was listed, as a Lodger, with Stephen Blacker at Stratton-on-the Fosse, Somerset; her occupation shown as "Spinner of Worsted". The children living with her were Menda Emblin (6), Pincot Emblin (4) and Charles Emblin (2). At later censuses the children were enumerated under the family name Blacker.
Richard had been born 7 April 1824 in Stoke Lane/Stoke St. Michael, Somerset, son of Richard (1799

James Curlett was born at Green Point, Prince Edward County. He commenced the study of medicine in 1837 at Fairfield College, New York and graduated at Geneva, New York in 1842. On his return, he attended Dr. Rolph's School at Toronto for one year and commenced practice at Demorestville. Here he met with good success however, removed to Belleville in 1869; he served as Surgeon to the 3rd Battalion, Prince Edward County. He was a member of the College of Physician and Surgeons of New York, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, a Licentiate of the Medical Board of Upper Canada and a Licentiate of the Surgical Military Board for the examination of Surgeons for the United States Army; he was also associated for some time as Demonstrator of Anatomy in Geneva, New York. Dr. Curlett was probably the oldest practitioner in the district when he died on August 29, 1898 aged 86.
