    RACE Irish

William Henry Harrison was a general in the war of 1812 and was elected US president in 1840/41 and died months later in office. Maybe he was named after this US president?

    Birth:
March 1st on death certificate & 1901 Census

Death certificate confirms his place of birth as Paris Ontario, originally provided by Gordon Polley

    Residence:
1869 William Polley: Concession 7. Lot 1, 50 acres. Value of each parcel recorded at 300. William Polley - 24 years of age, 1 person living in his household.

    Occupation:
While going through the Castleton Women's Institute records, I found a newspaper clipping titled Castleton in 1870 by T. J. Wilson. It is undated and the newspaper is not mentioned. Under places of business it lists W. H.
    Polley, fruit tree dealer.

Township of Cramahe Public Library, Castleton.

Gord Polley also remembers that his Grandfather had a nursery business in Castleton because he had a sign in the attic of their house that said William H. Polley Florist from that business.

    Occupation:
Township of Cramahe Public Library, Castleton

    Residence:
in the assessment roll for Cramahe Township 1872 it lists William Polley, Tenant, age 27, owner of land Joseph Keeler, school section 22, Concession 7, lot south half 33, 45 acres, 20 cleared. Residence:
Gordon Bradbury Polley remembered the Gilbert family as close family friends.

    Occupation:
Part owner of Polley & White, manufacturers of Canadian evaporated apples, and one of the largest handlers of dried apples and fruit, and also green apples, in the district. Gord Polley remembers his Grandpa was an "Apple man through and through" also that the evaporated apple factory caught fire and burned to the ground, unfortunatly there was no insurance so that was the end of that business. Some stationary from the apple factory still exists.

Apple Evaporator Plant located on Gilmour Hill which would be Dundas St. E and Marmora St area

An evaporator processing apples on Gilmour Hill has long since disappeared, but former employees recall with a chuckle that they very much disliked the Ben Davis Apples used for dehydrating purposes, while overseas customers seemed to be extremely fond of the variety. Likely the flavour improved during the sea voyage. - Trenton Past and Present

In the book Pioneer Life on the Bay of Qunite it lists a David McAuley who built "the first evaporator in the county, at Picton" he was also the first to start shipping apples to England. Could there be a connection?

WM. H. POLLY DIES. AGED 87
    WAS PIONEER

An old Trenton resident passed away at his home Monday morning in the person of Mr. William Harrison Polly in his eighty-eighth year. He was one of the old pioneers of Trenton having resided there for sixty years. Mr. Polly came to Trenton from Castelton as a young man when Trenton was nothing but a village. Here he settled and entered the exporting business. He entered the Customs Office in 1913 as Collector of Customs where he carried on his duties making a host of friends. He was superanuated in 1921 when he retired to his home on Murphy St.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Bertha Polly of Trenton. The funeral took place from St. George's Church on Tuesday afternoon the Rev. Heywood preaching the funeral sermon. Interment took place in the Anglican Cemetery where Mr. Polly will be buried. Many beautiful floral wreaths attest the fact of Mr Polly's many friends.

William married Mary MCGUIRE on 5 Jan 1883 in Toronto, , Ontario, Canada. Mary (daughter of Francis MCGUIRE and Jane MCAULEY) was born on 7 Feb 1859 in Murray Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada; was christened on 20 Feb 1859 in Trenton, , Ontario, Canada; died on 17 Jun 1935 in Trenton, , Ontario, Canada; was buried on 19 Jun 1935 in St George's Anglican Church, Trenton, , Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

    Married:
William and Mary do not seem to be married in Ontario, as of April 2008 I can't find any record of that marriage, they may have married in Rochester.

The census records from 1880(US) and 1881(CAN) show them as single and show their son William Jr as using the surname McGUIRE in 1880.

So if they got married it is more than likely in late 1881 or later, William Jr's immagration to Canada took place at either 1881(1911 census) or 1882(1901 census) so they may have been married before he and Mary came back to Canada.

(Research):I checked our marriage and death notice indexes, but couldn't find anything else. I also checked our city directories, but they didn't include Lansingburgh (north Troy) until 1860. In 1834 there was a John Hackett who was a farmer and a Thomas Hackett who was a brushmaker, and in 1836 there was a Thomas Polly who was a laborer, but there's no indication that they were related. They were all living in Troy. Robert and Mary Ann themselves were not in the city directory.

In the 1810 US Census there is a J Polley living in Troy, 5 members of the household, 2 white males under 10, 1 white female under 10, 1 white male aged 26-44, 1 white female aged 16-25. So J Polley is likely about 26 years old, his wife about 24 and three children under 10, this would fit with Robert being one of the three, likely the oldest. Robert's eldest son was named James Henry, could be after his father. - Source Citation Year: 1810; Census Place: Troy, Rensselaer, New York; Roll: 35; Page: 362; Image: 00037; Family History Library Film: 0181389

In the 1810 US Census there is a J Polly living in Troy, 4 members of the household, 1 white male under 10, 1 white female under 10, 1 white male 26-44 and 1 white female 16-25. Same possibility exists for this family other than the slight spelling difference. Obituary:
    COUNTY NEWS.
On Sunday, the 10th inst another old resident, in the person of old Mr. Polly, passed away at Castleton. He was perhaps the oldest man in this or the surrounding part of the country - 90 years, was greatly respected, lived a pious and devoted christian life and leaves a grown up family to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father. - Enterprise.

    Obituary:
The late Robert Polly, of Haldimand, passed away on Saturday last. He was in poor health for some time. He was ninety years old; having been a resident in that vicinity for over fifty years. The funeral took place on Monday, the Rev. Mr. Sutherland officiating, taking for his text part of the 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians, after which the remains were taken to the Castleton cemetery for interment. Mr. Polly leaves three sons and two daughters to mourn his loss. In his old age and in his affliction he was known to keep up the good cheer, putting his whole trust in Him who doeth all things well. - Enterprise.

    - Likely a reprint from the Colborne Enterprise

    Died:
The obit printed on April 21st 1892 clearly states that he died on Sunday April 10th. However the obit printed on April 28th 1892 says he died on "Saturday last" which I would take to mean the previous Saturday and therefore April 23rd. However that makes no sense in light of the obit on April 21st. If "Saturday last" referred to two Saturdays prior then it would be April 16th but I have to go with the April 10th date since it was mentioned specifically. It's possible that the death took place on late Saturday April 9th and therefore it was unclear if it was the 9th or 10th but I don't see how you get that from the term "Saturday last" unless this was a reprint from a much earlier date.

Robert married Mary Ann HACKETT on 27 Feb 1833 in Lansingburgh, Rensselaer, New York, USA. Feveral Debility & Old Age, Aged 76 years, 5 Months, 15 Days, Informant W.H. Polley (Son) of Trenton

Obit lists date of death as 8th May 1887, also her stone lists the same date. Registration date on death certificate is May (looks like 8th) 1887 as well. The death certificate clearly reads April 7th 1887. The death may not have been registered right away, the next certificate over there is a 4 month difference between the date of death and registration. However two certificates over you have someone who died on Oct 10th 1886 and was registered on July 6 1886, 3 months BEFORE they died.

So due to the inconsistencies on the death certificates I'll go with the May date for her death.

No 85 At Lansingburgh Feb 27 1883 Mr Robert Polley and Miss Mary Ann Hackett both of said town were married according to the rites of the *** Church

Trinity Episcopal Church is the Episcopal church in the area at the time and would be the most likely place for their marriage. However it burned down in 1868 and others have indicated that all the records were lost at that time.
