"David is said to have 'possessed considerable military taste,' and he became a Lieutenant and then Captain of the Third Battalion, Prince Edward Regiment, rising to be Lieutenant-Colonel as of January 2, 1838. He was sent to Toronto as a delegate of the first reform convention held in Upper Canada where the Confederation of the Provinces was planned.
