MARTHA SAPER

MARTHA LYLE SAPER (nee MACNEIL) Martha was born July 4, 1944 in Winnipeg to Robert and Margaret MacNeil, and passed away July 2, 2014. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her husband Jim, daughter Marla (Scott), sons Matthew (Kelly), and Michael (Alaina and granddaughter Stella), brother Rob (Mardi, nephew Kevin and niece Kristi), and many dear friends. In her early years Martha was a high school athlete playing basketball and volleyball and was also a certified lifeguard. She was a graduate of the University of Manitoba in the faculties of Home Economics and Education. She used her knowledge to teach life skills to many young people. Martha and Jim were married on October 30, 1968 and enjoyed a happy marriage together. Martha considered her crowning achievement to be her children, granddaughter and grandsons to come, of which she was extremely proud. She loved them unconditionally to no end. Martha enjoyed life and people. Her homes in both Winnipeg and at Lake of the Woods were always open to family and friends. Her generosity and willingness to help knew no bounds. Martha loved adventures - whether camping, spending time at the lake, or travelling - most recently to Alaska, China, Africa, Florida and Mexico. Martha was always reinventing herself. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, working at the RWB Things Store, attending extension courses at the University of Winnipeg, and learning how to drive a Sea-Doo this past summer at the lake. Her annual holiday parties were legend and highly anticipated by family and friends all throughout her married life. A service and celebration of her life was held on July 4, 2014. Upon gradualtion in medicine from the University of Manitoba with the gold medal in surgery, Bob enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1943 as a Surgeon Lieutenant. After serving with the Navy during the Second World War, he returned to Winnipeg and furthered his studies in pediatrics. As a specialist in the diseases of children, Bob maintained an active practice until his retirement in 1985.

Robert married Margaret Sarah KOTCHAPAW on 16 Jul 1943 in Winnipeg, , Manitoba, Canada. Notes:

Margaret was the responsible oldest child that helped her mother organize the others to get the house work done. She became a WREN in WWII.

After her marriage, she raised two children and assisted her husband with the bookkkeping side of his pracice as a General Practioner MD who took mainly children as patients.

Margaret enjoyed golf at the St Charles Country Club and she loved to garden both at her home and later at the cottage in Lac du Bonnet. She was very enthusiatic and loved to laugh.

Grandpa Bill. Bill was 8 when his mother passed on. His dad remarried but his stepmother reportedly was not very loving towards him.

My grandfather loved to farm and loved that particular farm but the tradition was that the older son inherited the farm. So as the second son, Bill had to go to town to get a job. In 1909 at the age of 18, Grandpa Bill went to Winnipeg and became a shoe salesman . One of the stories of how he met my Grandmother Bessie was while fitting shoes on her. Another story was that they met at a snow shoe club event. So definitely

Notes:

Bessie was born in Brown's Corners, Scarborough,Ontario. Her sister Kate was married and living in Winnipeg when Bessie moved there in 1912. Bessie was about 5' 5 tall with brown hair and cornflower blue eyes. Her appearance was similar to Scots women. She raised four daughters and one son - Margaret, Marion, Bill, Bettty and Alison.

In her own home, Bessie worked tirelessly . Every year, she made jams and jellies from all the currents and berries grown by her beloved husband. Bessie also played the piano for sing-a-longs when her five children were young. She had many close friends. She also enjoyed her cigarettes!

She was a member of Westminister United Church for many years. She served as President of the Board of Children's Hospital and was a member of the Lieutenant Melville Wood Guild of the Hospital and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Khatrurm Temple of the Shrine.
