    Obituary:
    Samuel Wiltshire Dies on Thursday

Former Ludington Resident Passes away at Farm Hone Near Branch.
Scottville, Mich., Sept. 17. - Death came to Samuel Wiltshire 76 years of age, at his home in Branch at 2 o'clock Thursday morning. Mr. Wiltshire had been confined to his bed since June 20. His illness was due to arterio-sclorosis.
Samuel Wiltshire was born in England, June 23 1851. He lived there until after his marriage to Elizabeth Hughes Rayland(sp), and soon after came to America. For several years they lived in Canada, later coming to Illinois, where they made their home in Freeport. They came to Ludington 20 years ago and for years conducted a tin shop on James street. Mr. Wiltshire also conducted a chicken ranch near Epworth, where he became noted for one of the first attempts at this line in the county. Later his health failed and in 1918 he purchased a farm near branch where he was able to enjoy a quieter life.
Mr Wiltshire was a strong character. Everyone who came in contact with him in any capacity were impressed by his honesty and outspoken stand for the right. He lived his Christianity, making it a part of his every day life and his dealing. During the years when it was possible he attended the Baptist church at Ludington.
Surviving are the widow, three sons and three daughters. The sons are Frank Wiltshire of Iroquois, Ill; Ebenezer of Lansing, and Samuel of Athelstane Wis. The daughters are Mrs. Ethel Bruisker of Forreston, Ill; Mrs. Frances James of Freport, Ill, and Miss Lilly Wiltshire at home. The children were all at home with their parents when the father passed away, except Samuel, who is expected to arrive in time for the funeral.
Funeral services will be held from the home at Branch at 2 o'clock fast time, Sunday afternoon. Rev. Gustave Edwin Anderson of the Washington Avenue Baptist church, Ludington will officiate. Burial will be in the Brookside cemetery, Scottville.

Research done by Tim and Elaine Newbold January 2014:

Please find below details of the search for James RYLAND c 1788. I have made an extensive search for a trace of James and his parents, The name of Ryland is very rare in Oxfordshire records . I note that James son was buried in the non conformist burial ground which suggest the family were non conformists hence the lack of Ryland in the parish registers . The first non conformist records for Burford do not begin until 1809 . James gives Burford as his place of birth on the Census records but he could have appeared in a non conformists records in nearby area's . I did find a possible entry in Birmingham in 1788 but this child appears in the burial records in 1789. John Ryland of Birmingham well known non-conformist he even has a memorial window . It is possible your James is related in someway hence the non-conformist interest and lack of Parish register entries in Burford for the Rylands?

I have as far as I can see exhausted the Oxfordshire records . Burford is very near to the border of Gloucestershire I do not research in the Gloucestershire archives but It may be worth researching . I am sorry If have not been able to locate James parents in any of the records searched in Oxfordshire I would have very liked to have done so .

    Parish Records

    Parish: Burford, Oxfordshire

    Date c 1788

Apart from the Parish Registers the only Burford record for c 1788 was the Church Wardens Accounts

    Church Wardens Accounts

    Ref: C 36

    Date 1624-1790

    Searched 1770-1790

No trace of any mention of the name of Ryland.

The burial of James in 1832 in the Burford Protestant Dissenters Burial Ground, I suggest is a good indication that the family was likely non-conformist . I searched for a possible baptism for James in the area and found a possible entry ..I have attached a copy of the baptism of James RYLAND born 1 Sep 1788 James son of Thomas & Mary RYLAND at the Old Presbyterian Meeting House at Birmingham. I looked into this entry further and I went on to locate a burial of James I have attached a copy of the Birmingham St Martin 10 May 1789 James son of Thomas & Mary RYLAND (Ref 40458)

The father of James was Thomas he had a twin brother John and was born in Stratford upon Avon .

In the same register of James's baptism is a baptism of a William son of John & Sarah RYLAND bn 30 DEC 1787 Chr 25 Jan 1788 two brothers ie John & Thomas chr children

    Calandar of the Birmingham Riots

    Friday 15 July 1791

2pm just outside the town 1000 rioters burnt down John RYLANDS Baskerville House of Easy Hill Broad Street, formerly John Baskerville's residence, Some drunken rioters burned with it. Several hundred special constables who had been hastily sworn in by magistrates in St Philip's Churchyard were repulsed by the mob.

The family of Ryland from birmingham were non-conformists and possible some how related to yours , at least I have ruled out the James chr 1788 in Birmingham.

Burfords earliest non-conformist records only begin with birth records in 1809 , the only Ryland family mentioned in the Burford parish registers is your James family . no trace of a possible burials of any Rylands that could have been his parents in Burford.

(Medical):Apoplexy is an outdated medical term, which can be used to mean 'bleeding'. It can be used non-medically to mean a state of extreme rage or excitement. The word derives from the Greek word for 'seizure', apople-xia, in the sense of being struck down.

    Historical meaning

Historically, the word "apoplexy" was also used to describe any sudden death that began with a sudden loss of consciousness, especially one in which the victim died within a matter of seconds after losing consciousness. Those reading historical documents should take into consideration the possibility that the word "apoplexy" may be used to describe the symptom of sudden loss of consciousness immediately preceding death and not an actual verified disease process. Sudden cardiac deaths, ruptured cerebral aneurysms, certain ruptured aortic aneurysms, and even heart attacks may have been described as apoplexy in the past.

    Hemorrhage

The term 'apoplexy' is used to describe bleeding within internal organs. In such usage it is coupled with an adjective describing the site of the bleeding. For example, bleeding within the pituitary gland is called pituitary apoplexy, and bleeding within the adrenal glands can be called adrenal apoplexy.

In both pituitary and adrenal apoplexy, the word apoplexy refers to both hemorrhage with the gland and to accompanying neurological problems such as confusion, headache, and impairment of consciousness.

    carrying out of his duties."

A Farm Bailiff holds a similar position to a Reeve or Farm
Steward. He is responsible for the daily running of the Farm and
often if the owner is away makes major decisions as to the
requirements e g purchasing stock etc. he is also usually
responsible for the Hiring and Firing of Labourers and often
paying their salaries ( the owner provides the wherewithal)
Mostly if an owner can afford a Bailiff he will also employ a
Groom to take charge of the stables, but sometimes the
responsibility for the Horses is his as well.

    Inquest:
    BURFORD
Inquest - An inquest was held at the Bull Hotel, in this town, on Wednesday last, before Frederick Westell, Esq., Coroner, on the body of a man named James Ryland, aged 78, shepherd to C. F. A. Faulkner, Esq., who was found lying in an insensible state, on Monday evening, in the Signett road. Edward Wiggins, tailor, deposed to seeing the deceased about nine o'clock, when going that way in company with a friend, named Money, lying in the road in an insensible state, and that they immediately ran to Burford and gave an alarm, when assistance was procured, and he was removed to the Rose and Crown Inn, where he was attended by Mr. Cheatle, surgeon, till next morning, when he expired. The widow of the deceased said that he had frequently complained of giddiness in the head for the last few days, but had not done so on Monday, and he had gone out to see the sheep, as usual, about seven o'clock in the evening. Mr. Cheatle gave it as his opinion that death was caused by apoplexy. Verdict accordingly.
