Pierre was a ploughman and lived in the village of Saint-Sauveur de Nuaille'. In those times, and even today, the farmers do not live on the lands they cultivate but rather in the village nearby. Pierre abandoned farming in 1650 and moved to LaRochelle, a major seaport and shipbuilding center where he took up work as a laborer.
