On June 6 1944 LCT 947 was landing on Sword Beach and had the first Officer to be killed in the landings aboard at the time.

    https://sites.google.com/site/frimleyandcamberley/frimley-and-camberley-2nd-world-war-1939---1945-memorial/arthur-dennis-bradford-cocks-1904---1944

Arthur was Killed in the Action during the assault on Sword Beach, D-Day, gaining the distinction of being the first British Officer Killed in the Landings.

On D-Day Arthur was Lieutenant-Colonel of the 5th Assault Regiment Royal Engineers. They were a specialist unit equipped with converted vehicles such as the so called 'Hobart's Funnies' intended to clear the beaches and make exits onto the first inland road.

    Arthur was aboard LCT-947 (109) which carried 2 Crabs and 4 A.V.R.E (converted Churchill tanks) which he Commanded from the A.V.R.E named Plough. An account given by Lambton Burn a Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who was aboard LCT-947 wrote the following;

" Shells are bursting all round. They are not friendly shorts from bombardment warships, but vicious stabs from an enemy who has held his fire until the final two hundred yards. He is shooting well shooting often. Mortar shells whine and burst with sickening inevitability. An L.C.T. to port goes up in flames.

There is a sudden jerk as our bows hit the beach. Down goes the ramp, with Sub-Lieutenant Monty Glengarry, R.N.Z.N.V.R. [Royal New Zealand Navy Volunteer Reserve] and his party working like madmen at the bows.

There is a roar of acceleration and Donald Robertson in Stornoway [the first Crab, which managed to disembark] is away like a relay runner.

Dunbar [the second Crab] moves forward. Colonel Cocks leans from his turret [he had elected to command from the Plough] and motions the other tank-commanders to follow. But enemy fire is now concentrated on us. There are bursts on both sides and then snap two direct hits on our bows followed by a third snap like a whip cracking over the tank hold.

The First Lieutenant is flung sideways against a bulkhead and lies stunned. Dunbar stops in her tracks slews sideways blocks the door. Another and greater explosion as the bangalore shafts of Barbarian [the Log Carpet A.V.R.E., with Captain Fairie in command] explode with a flash of red.

Colonel Cocks is killed as he stands, and there is a scream from within his tank. Cold with anger, Tom Fairie moves Barbarian forward tries to edge Dunbar to the ramp but fails. He vaults from his turret and is joined by other tank-men who strain furiously to bring chain and tackle to bear."

The badly damaged LCT-947 (109) made a difficult return to England where the troop vehicles and survivors were transferred to another LCT, eventually reaching Normandy later in the month.

    https://www.combinedops.com/D-DAY%20BEACH%20LANDING.htm

Mk4 LCT 947(i) [15] was 'Leader' of the 45th LCT(AVRE)(j) Flotilla assigned to the 5th Assault Regiment, Royal Engineers. Only one tank managed to disembark LCT 947 that morning. The second tank in line carried Commander Royal Engineers, Lt Col ADB Cocks. As the tank moved forward, the LCT took three direct hits in her bows. The tank lurched sideways and stopped in its tracks, blocking the exit. Despite frantic efforts by engineers and the forecastle party, it proved impossible to move the tank out of the way, so the remaining tanks on board could not disembark. A greater explosion soon followed, when pipes packed with dynamite on board a neighbouring AVRE 'Carpet

    Notes:

Long time choir member, Betty Ryeland retires By Richard Baker About forty years ago, Peter and Betty Ryeland moved from Sault Saint Marie with their four children to take up residence in Aurora. Shortly thereafter, Betty joined the choir at Trinity and brought her considerable musical talents and love of Anglican liturgy to enrich the music programme, which was then under the direction of Ruth Harris. Both then and for many years thereafter, she was the choir's soprano soloist and would from time to time perform a solo recital. It was also the start of an enduring friendship with musicians Illtyd and Ruth Harris, and Betty always enjoyed visiting the beautiful "English Country Garden" at the Harris house on Mark Street and spending time in the summer with them at their cottage in Parry Sound. After Ruth retired in 1972, Betty continued in the choir with subsequent directors Greg Paskaruk, Richard Baker and Tony Browning, always making a substantial contribution to the musical life at Trinity. It was a very difficult decision that she made to retire from the choir due to mobility problems, and she misses being part of the Adult Choir immensely. Our music programme has that effect on people! The parish offers her our heartfelt thanks for all that she contributed and continues to contribute to the life of Trinity.

Went to live with her parents with her two sons while her husband went to Canada to find work before going over to join him.

    Obituary:
    In Celebration of
    William (Bill) George Alexander
    July 5, 1928 - January 25, 2021
Peacefully, on Monday, January 25, 2021, at Lakeland Long Term Care, at the age of 92. Bill was the beloved husband of Ruth for 70 years, and a devoted family man. Cherished father of Margaret Colbear (Bob), Peter Alexander (Frances) and Judy Ryeland (Nick).

Adored grandfather of 6; Becky Agar (Mike), Kimberly Ferris (Mark) Adam Ryeland (Julie), Geoff Ryeland (Macy), Connor Ryeland, and Sam Alexander.

Much loved great grandfather of 8; Matthew Agar, Tim Agar, Andrew Ferris, Audrey Ferris, Nicole Ryeland, Paige Ryeland, Nathan Ryeland, and William Ryeland.

A long time resident of Etobicoke, he volunteered with the Toronto Accessibility Committee and the Disability Steering Committee, where he was affectionately known as "Big Bad Bill". His other volunteer work included Trillium Hospital Queensway site and Dorothy Ley Hospice. A famous phrase he would often repeat was: "Just Do It" In other words stop talking about it or writing reports about it and JUST DO IT! He was enduringly relentless. Bill had a way of working the back halls and holding conversations with high ranking people that left an impact. He was extremely well respected and got results, often with few words and that twinkle in his eye! Bill was very influential in the new wing at the Mississauga site, which is barrier free and wheelchair accessible throughout, and he was instrumental in having the airlines pressure the aircraft manufacturers to introduce ON-BOARD handicapped washrooms, a standard which has been adopted worldwide!'

Bill was the type of guy that made the world a better place for all and won many awards for his volunteer work, of particular note he received the Community Action Award from Lieutenant Governor David Onley. As a mark of his community impact, he will soon be remembered by a Toronto Council Condolence Motion in February 2021.

Bill graduated from Central Tech in 1946 as an Aircraft Mechanic, received his Air Engineer's Certificate in 1950, then worked for Ontario Hydro for almost 40 years as an Air Maintenance Engineer, where he travelled constantly across most areas of Ontario. Starting In 1966 he also volunteered as a Leader for Scouts Canada and Venturers where he was known as "Sarge" for more than 10 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held outdoors in the summer, weather and COVID permitting.

If desired, donations may be made to the West Parry Sound Health Centre www.wpshcf.com
