    Notes:

The will of George Spearpoint is written in Tudor and Stuart handwriting and also includes Latin, therefore hard to understand. But George doses clearly state the order that his daughter's are born; "Elizabeth Spearepointe my oldest daughter", "Ann Spearepointe my second daughter" and "Eleasee Spearepointe my youngest daughter". And refers to his son's as; "Michaell Spearepointe my oldest son", "Ingraham Spearepointe my son" and "John Spearepointe my son".

This is my best attempt to transcribe the will of George Spearpoint. Note that it is taken from the copy in the court where it was proved, so it has already been transcribed once. The spelling of the name of George's youngest daughter twice appears as Ereasee and once as Creasee, so the clerk who transcribed it first doesn't seem to have been able to read it either! The other Spearpoint family pages on the web put it down in a modern form as Elise - but the second letter certainly ain't an 'l'.

I think that the will was written by George himself - it certainly doesn't read as all that legalistic. The note at the end made when it was proved is in Latin, which I haven't worked out yet, but it does say something about 'autoscriptum'.

He left a probate account which I have done my best to transcribe below. This is the odest document I have tried to read so far, and I must admit that many of the words are very speculative. Unfortunately, since the contents are very uninformative, it doesn't really matter a lot. Never mind :- here it is.

Described as a Yeoman of Lydd in the parish register.

There is a will of a Robert Spearpoint of Lydd dated 1540, so we assume it is his. It seems surprising that there is no mention of his son Robert. I gather that this is not unusual - eg. if the eldest son is already farming the family farm and living in the family home, then it would seem silly to write a will leaving it to him - but in this case we believe that his son Robert is a minor at the time.

This is my best attempt at reading it so far :

In Dei Nomine Amen The seventh (?) day of the month of Feb in the yere of our Lord god 1530 (?) I Robert Sperpoynt of Lydd Gent in perfecte Remembrance ordeign (?) and make this my ____ testament in form folowing first I bequeath my soule to ____ trust to our blessed Lady the Virgin Mary And to all the celestial (?) Company (?) ____ And my body is to be burried in the church yard of Lydd forsaid Item I bequeath to the kepe ____ of the said Church of Lydd ____ Item I bequeath to Alice Cyppe the wife of Symond Cyppe 20 (?) (?) Item I bequeath to Elizabeth and Dorothy my sisters betwixt them
