Obituary:
DEATH OF ONE OF CAPTAIN WEBB'S BOATMEN
On Thursday last John Thomas Gates, who was one of the fourteen persons who accompanied Captian Webb across the Channel on his memorable swim, died at 66, Bulwark Street, Dover, at the age of 73 years. The funeral took place at St. Mary's Cemetery on Monday, the first part of the service being conducted at Trinity Church. There were a large number of wreaths, including the following: - From the widow; Will and Norah Allen and Eddie; George and Nell; Nell and Dolly; sister and family (Slough); Mr. and Mrs. F. Casbourne (Plymouth), Mr. and Mrs. H. Vallis (Woodburn Green); Fred, Willie and Alice, Horace, Bert, Norah, and Reggie; Aunt Mary and Charlie; H. Winks (Narborough, Leicester); Mrs. Longley; Mary; Mr., Mrs., and Miss Appleton; the Travelling Staff G.P.O., etc.

I have John living in Hougham Kent in the 1851 census as a Blacksmith with wife Mary, Son John, and Daughter Jane the right ages. But that does not match with the below account...

In 1851 John was a tailor living on Victoria Row, Charlton Dover. His wife Ann was born c1801 Dover. In 1858 John Willson Gates was a tailor living on High St., Charlton. In 1861 John and his wife Ann lived at 20 High St., Charlton. In 1871 John was a tailor living at 7 Durham Hill, St. Mary Dover.
